AC Only Cold While Driving in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
An A/C that is cold on the highway but warm at stop lights is usually short of airflow at the front of the vehicle, most often because a cooling fan is not running.
Harvest makes it obvious: the truck idles in the line at the elevator for what feels like an hour, chaff drifting past the windshield, and the vents slowly turn warm, until you pull away and it goes cold again. At speed the wind does the fan's job, which is why it only shows up when you stop. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

We check the fan before we touch the refrigerant. Most of the time the A/C is doing its job and the airflow at the front is not, so topping it up would miss the point and could make it worse.
We find which part of the fan circuit failed. A fuse or a relay is a small fix, and a fan motor is a bigger one, and we tell you which you have before we quote.
We clean what harvest left behind. Chaff and bugs packed between the condenser and the radiator can be cleaned out carefully, which often helps the engine as much as the A/C.
You approve every repair before we start, and we test it idling in the bay before we hand back the keys.
Why Hillsboro brings this A/C problem to Moxie
-
We check the engine too
A fan that fails the A/C can also fail the engine, so we look at both.

Can I keep driving?
Yes on the open road, but watch the temperature gauge in traffic and at idle.
The A/C itself is not in danger, and highway driving is fine while you book a visit. The catch is that the fan that cools the A/C on many vehicles also cools the engine when you are not moving. Long idles, towing and stop-and-go traffic are when that shows up, so keep an eye on the gauge and avoid sitting still with the engine running for long.
Stop driving and call us if
- The temperature gauge climbs toward hot, or a temperature warning light comes on
- You see steam from under the hood or smell something sweet
- You hear a loud roar, rattle or scraping from the fan area
- The A/C goes warm at speed as well, not just at idle

What makes an A/C warm at idle around here
- An electric cooling fan motor that has worn out
- A fan relay, fuse or temperature sensor that never tells the fan to run
- A worn fan clutch on a rear-wheel-drive pickup, which spins the fan too slowly at idle
- A condenser and radiator packed with harvest chaff, bugs and cottonwood fluff
- Bent condenser fins from gravel and hail, which block airflow at low speed
- A system that has been overfilled, so pressure climbs as soon as the airflow drops
How we diagnose an ac that is only cold while driving in Hillsboro
- We ask when it goes warm and what the temperature gauge does, because idle-only trouble points us to the front of the vehicle first.
- We idle the vehicle with the A/C on and watch whether the fans come on when they should.
- We test the fan motor, relay, fuse and the signal that commands them, so we know which one failed.
- We look through the grille at the condenser and radiator for debris and bent fins.
- We connect gauges and watch the pressure rise at idle, which tells us whether the charge is right.

Questions about an A/C that is only cold while driving
Why does my A/C only work when I am moving?
At speed, the wind pushes air through the condenser at the front of the vehicle, which is where the A/C gets rid of its heat. When you stop, a fan has to do that instead. If the fan is not running or the condenser is clogged, the air warms up until you move again.
Is this the same as an A/C that goes warm after a while?
It is a different problem. An A/C that fades over a long drive, even at highway speed, is usually icing up or cutting out from heat. Warm at a stop and cold again as soon as you move is the airflow problem this page covers, so tell us which one you see.
Can I just rinse out the radiator myself?
A gentle rinse from the engine side out, with the engine cold, can help with light dust. A pressure washer bends the thin fins easily and can make things worse. If chaff is packed between the condenser and the radiator, it usually needs parts moved to reach it, and we can do that for you.
