Diesel Hard Starting in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A diesel that is hard to start, especially on a cold morning, most often has weak glow plugs, weak batteries or a fuel problem.

A diesel has no spark plugs. It lights its fuel by squeezing air until it is hot, so a cold engine needs help from glow plugs or an intake heater to get going. You know the morning: it is eight degrees in January, the cattle need feeding, and the pickup just cranks and cranks while the batteries get slower. We would rather find the weak link in our shop in Hillsboro than in your driveway, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How Moxie fixes diesel hard starting for good

  1. We test the whole starting system, not just the part that failed last. Batteries, glow plugs and fuel all need to be healthy on a cold morning, and fixing one while the next one is about to go just moves the problem to next week.

  2. We test before we replace. Each glow plug and each battery gets checked on its own, so you pay for the parts that are actually worn and not for a whole set on a hunch.

  3. We check the cheap fixes too. If your truck has a block heater, we make sure it works, because plugging it in overnight is the least expensive cold-start help there is.

  4. Then we explain what we found and give you a price before we start. If something can wait until spring, we will tell you that as well.

Why Hillsboro brings its hard-starting diesels to Moxie

  • We test before winter

A fall check of batteries and glow plugs catches the weak parts before the first hard freeze.

  • Free pickup and delivery

Within 40 road miles, including Lindsborg, Moundridge and Cottonwood Falls, we can collect a truck that will not start reliably.

  • An ASE-certified technician

Our technician is ASE certified in engine repair, automatic transmissions and drivetrains, and Moxie pays for ASE testing for the whole team.

  • Warranty in writing

Most repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and engine and transmission work carries Moxie's own one-year warranty. We tell you which one covers your repair before any work starts.

Can I keep driving?

Once it is running it is usually fine to drive to us, but it may not start again.

A hard start is not usually dangerous in itself, but it tends to get worse, not better, as the weather cools. The real risk is being stranded on a cold morning or at a job site. Repeated long cranking also wears the starter and drains the batteries. Book it in before the next cold snap rather than after.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The engine will not start at all
  • It starts and stalls repeatedly
  • A fuel leak or strong fuel smell around the engine
  • The engine runs very roughly with heavy smoke once started

What makes diesels hard to start around here
  • Worn glow plugs, or on some diesels a failed intake grid heater, which warms the air instead
  • A failed glow plug controller or relay, so the plugs never get power
  • Weak or mismatched batteries, since most diesel pickups carry two and one bad one drags down both
  • Fuel gelling on a hard Kansas freeze, when summer diesel thickens and cannot flow through the filter
  • A clogged fuel filter or water in the fuel, which is common in trucks that sit between seasons
  • Air getting into the fuel lines, which makes the fuel pump lose its prime
  • Worn injectors or low compression, which cause hard starts hot or cold
How we find the cause of a hard start
  1. We ask whether it is hard to start only when cold, or when warm too, because that separates glow plug trouble from fuel and injector trouble.
  2. We load-test both batteries individually and check the starter and cables.
  3. We test each glow plug or the intake heater, plus the controller and wiring that power them.
  4. We read the engine computer, including fuel pressure while cranking.
  5. We inspect the fuel filter and water separator, and look for air in the fuel system.
What we check
  • Batteries, cables and the starter
  • Glow plugs or intake grid heater
  • Glow plug controller, relay and wiring
  • Fuel filter and water separator
  • Fuel pressure while cranking
  • Block heater, if the truck has one
What the repair usually is
  • Replacing glow plugs or the glow plug controller
  • Replacing an intake grid heater or its relay
  • Replacing one or both batteries
  • A new fuel filter, draining water, or clearing gelled fuel
  • Repairing a fuel line that is letting air in
  • Injector repair when testing shows the injectors are the cause

Diesel hard starting questions we hear every winter

Why is my diesel hard to start in cold weather?

Diesels rely on hot, squeezed air to light the fuel, and cold air and a cold engine make that harder. Glow plugs or an intake heater make up the difference. When they wear out, or the batteries are too weak to power them and crank the engine at the same time, cold starts are the first thing to suffer.

How do I know if my glow plugs are bad?

The usual signs are long cranking on cold mornings, white smoke and a rough idle until the engine warms up, and sometimes a flashing glow plug light. The engine may start normally once it is warm. A test on each plug confirms it, which is quicker and cheaper than replacing the whole set on a hunch.

How can I stop my diesel fuel from gelling in winter?

Many Kansas stations switch to a winter blend of diesel in the cold months, which resists gelling. On very cold nights, a fuel additive made for diesel and plugging in a block heater both help. If your fuel has already gelled, call or text us on (620) 416-0008 and we will clear it and replace the filter.
