Cummins Repair in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
If your Ram 2500 or 3500 is smoking, losing power or starting hard, Cummins repair here in Hillsboro starts with finding out why, before anything gets replaced.
The Cummins has a reputation for running forever, and plenty of them do, but the fuel system, turbo and emissions parts around the engine still wear out. You tend to notice on the day it matters, like pulling a stock trailer up a long hill outside Peabody and feeling the power fade halfway up. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesWhat Cummins repair at Moxie actually looks like
We diagnose before we quote. A Cummins that smokes could have an injector problem, a boost leak or a clogged filter, and each one is a very different bill. Testing tells us which one you actually have. We work on the 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins in Ram pickups, and on Cummins engines in medium-duty trucks and farm equipment too.
We check the fuel before we blame the parts. Water and dirt in diesel cause symptoms that look expensive, and getting them out is one of the cheaper fixes on a diesel.
We keep the explanation plain. You will know what failed, why it matters and what it costs, without needing to speak diesel.
Nothing is done until you approve the work and the price. If a repair can wait until the field work is done, we will tell you that too.

What wears out a Cummins around here
- Worn fuel injectors that spray unevenly, causing smoke and a rough idle
- A weak lift pump or a clogged fuel filter starving the engine of fuel
- A turbocharger with a sticking vane, or a boost leak in the hoses, often found while towing
- A clogged EGR valve or cooler, the system that sends some exhaust back through the engine
- A diesel particulate filter (DPF) that has filled with soot from short trips and long idles
- A failed intake grid heater, the part a Cummins uses to start on a cold Kansas morning
How we track down a Cummins problem
- We scan every module on the truck and look at stored, pending and history codes.
- We watch live data while it runs, including fuel pressure, boost and exhaust temperatures, so we see the problem happening instead of guessing at it.
- We check the fuel for water and dirt, a common and cheap-to-fix cause of expensive-looking symptoms.
- We test the suspect part directly before we recommend replacing it.
- We give you a clear answer and a price before any work starts.

Cummins repair questions we hear every week
Why is my Cummins blowing black smoke?
Black smoke means the engine is getting more fuel than it can burn cleanly. That is often a leaking or worn injector, a boost leak, a dirty air filter or a turbo that is not keeping up. A small puff when you floor it can be normal on an older truck, but steady black smoke is worth a diagnosis. Text us when it happens and we will point you in the right direction.
Does a Cummins have glow plugs?
Most Cummins engines in Ram pickups use an intake grid heater instead of glow plugs. It warms the air coming into the engine so it starts in the cold. When the grid heater or its relay fails, the truck cranks long and smokes white on cold mornings, which is a common complaint around Hillsboro every winter.
How much does Cummins repair cost?
The price depends on what failed. A fuel filter and a set of injectors are very different jobs, and a turbo sits somewhere in between. We diagnose first and give you a price before any work starts. For larger repairs, pay over time with Affirm. Checking your eligibility won't affect your credit score.
