Battery Light On in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A battery light that comes on while driving usually means the car has stopped charging, often from a failing alternator or belt, and is running on the battery alone.

You are halfway home on US-56 from McPherson when the little red battery lights up, and nothing else seems wrong yet. That light is a countdown, because the car will keep running only until the battery runs out. Get somewhere safe, and bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix a battery warning light

  1. We check the belt before anything else. A snapped belt is a cheaper fix than an alternator, and on many engines it also drives the water pump, so it matters twice.

  2. We test the charging system properly. The alternator gets tested under load, not just at idle, so a part that is weak but not dead does not slip past.

  3. We check what the dead battery left behind. Running a battery flat can damage it, so we test it too and tell you honestly if it made it through.

  4. You approve the repair first. We tell you what it needs and what it costs.

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.

Can I keep driving?

Only as far as the nearest safe place, and not onto the highway.

With the battery light on, the car is using up its stored power, and when that runs out the engine can shut off, taking power steering and brake assist with it. Head straight for our shop or home if it is close, keep accessories off, and do not stop the engine until you get there, because it may not restart. If the temperature gauge rises too, pull over and call.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The temperature gauge climbs or a temperature warning comes on
  • The steering suddenly gets heavy
  • You hear a loud slap or squeal and then the light comes on
  • You smell burning rubber or hot wiring

What turns the battery light on around here
  • A worn-out alternator, which is the most common reason
  • A serpentine belt that is cracked, loose or broken, often after years of heat and dust
  • A loose or corroded cable between the alternator and the battery
  • A failing voltage regulator, the part that controls how much the alternator charges
  • Harvest dust and chaff packed around the alternator, which can make it run hot
How we diagnose a battery light that is on in Hillsboro
  1. We check the belt first, because a broken belt can also stop the water pump.
  2. We measure the alternator's output with the engine running and the lights and fan on.
  3. We load-test the battery, since running flat may have damaged it.
  4. We check the cables, fuses and grounds between the alternator and the battery.
  5. We show you what failed and what it costs before we replace anything.

Questions about the battery warning light

How far can I drive with the battery light on?

You cannot go far, and there is no reliable distance. It depends on how charged the battery was and how much power the car is using. Keep accessories off, go straight to the shop or home, and call us if it is not close.

Is the battery light the battery or the alternator?

It is usually the alternator or the belt that turns it. The light is watching the charging system, so it comes on when the battery is not being charged. We test the battery too, because running it flat can damage it.

The light came on and then went off. Should I worry?

You should, a little. A battery light that comes and goes often means an alternator or connection that is starting to fail. Book it in soon, before it stays on for good on a drive home.
