Car Wanders on the Road in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A car that wanders, drifting one way and then the other so you keep correcting, usually has worn steering parts, an alignment problem or tires that need attention.
You feel it on I-135 between Newton and McPherson on a windy afternoon, when every passing semi nudges you and the car takes too long to settle back into its lane. A pull goes one way, and wandering goes both, which is a useful clue. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix a car that wanders at Moxie
We check the tires and the parts before the alignment. An alignment on worn joints or mismatched tires will not cure wandering, so those come first.
We replace what is worn and tell you what can wait. We show you the loose parts and say plainly which ones matter now.
We set the alignment to suit your truck. Lifted and leveled trucks need their steering angles set to match, and we do that on our Hunter equipment.
Then we drive it on a straight road. It has to hold its lane with your hands relaxed, and you approve every repair before we start.

What makes a car wander around here
- Worn tie rod ends, ball joints and bushings from rough county roads across Marion, Harvey, McPherson, Chase and Lyon Counties
- An alignment knocked out by potholes, curbs and washboard gravel
- Worn or mismatched tires, or tires at uneven pressures
- Worn shocks and struts that let the tires bounce off the road
- Lift and leveling kits or bigger tires fitted without a full alignment
- Heavy trailers that press down on the hitch and lift the front of the truck
How we diagnose a car that wanders in Hillsboro
- We ask when it wanders, whether always, in wind, on rutted roads or only when towing.
- We set all four tire pressures and look at the tires for uneven or mismatched wear.
- We road-test it on straight roads to feel how it tracks.
- We lift it and check the tie rods, ball joints, bushings, shocks and struts.
- We measure the alignment on our Hunter equipment and show you the readings.

Questions about a car that wanders
How is wandering different from pulling?
A car that pulls heads steadily to one side, which usually points to tire pressure, alignment or a brake. A car that wanders drifts both ways and needs constant correcting, which usually points to worn steering parts, worn shocks or the tires. Telling us which one you feel helps us start in the right place.
My truck started wandering after a leveling kit. Why?
Raising the front changes the angles the steering depends on to hold a straight line. Those angles need an alignment set to the new height, and sometimes extra parts to get them back in range. We check it and tell you what it needs.
Why does it only wander when I am towing?
A heavy trailer presses down on the hitch and lifts the front of the truck, which takes weight off the front tires. With less grip, the steering feels light and vague. A better hitch setup often fixes it, and we can help with that too.
