Engine Shaking in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
An engine that shakes the whole vehicle is usually misfiring or sitting on a worn engine mount, and the first job is to tell those apart from a wheel or tire problem.
You feel it through the seat and the steering wheel pulling out of a field drive near Durham, and the mirror blurs every time you touch the gas. The shake is the engine telling you something has come loose or stopped pulling its weight. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix an engine that shakes
We work out where the shake lives. The engine, the mounts and the wheels can all feel the same from the driver's seat, and fixing the wrong one wastes your money.
We fix the cause, not just the feeling. A new mount on an engine that is also misfiring will not stop the shake, so we check both before quoting.
We tell you what is urgent and what can wait. A cracked mount and a failing coil are not always the same priority, and we will say which is which.
You approve the price first. Afterward we drive it again, parked and on the road, to make sure the shake is gone.

Can I keep driving?
Gently and for short trips, unless the engine light is flashing.
A mild shake from a worn mount, or a small misfire with a steady light, will usually get you to the shop. A hard shake with a flashing check engine light is different, because the misfire is bad enough to damage the exhaust. A broken mount can also let the engine move far enough to strain hoses and wiring, so do not leave it for long.
Stop driving and call us if
- The check engine light is flashing
- The shaking is getting worse by the day or the engine loses power
- You hear a loud clunk or the engine lurches when you shift
- You smell fuel or burning, or see smoke

What makes an engine shake around here
- A misfire from worn spark plugs or a failed ignition coil
- Worn or broken engine mounts, the rubber blocks that hold the engine still, which crack with age and heat
- A clogged fuel injector starving one cylinder
- A vacuum leak making the engine run unevenly, common after a cold winter
- Towing and heavy loads that wear mounts on pickups faster
- A tire or wheel problem, which can feel like the engine but changes with road speed
How we diagnose an engine that shakes in Hillsboro
- We feel it with you first, parked, in gear and on the road, to see whether the shake follows engine speed or road speed.
- We read misfire counts and live data to see whether a cylinder is not pulling its weight.
- We watch the engine move while a helper shifts between drive and reverse, which shows a broken mount straight away.
- We check the plugs, coils and injectors on the cylinder that is missing.
- If the engine checks out, we look at wheels, tires and axles, because they can imitate an engine shake.

Engine shaking questions we hear every week
How do I know if it is the engine or my tires shaking?
Check whether the shake follows engine speed or road speed. If it shakes while parked, or changes when you rev the engine, it is the engine or its mounts. If it only shakes at a certain road speed, the wheels or tires are the more likely cause.
Is engine shaking the same as a rough idle?
They are close cousins, but not the same. A rough idle shows up mainly at a stop, while engine shaking can happen at any speed and is felt through the whole vehicle. A worn engine mount can cause shaking even when the engine itself runs perfectly.
Can a bad engine mount really make the car shake?
Yes, it can make the whole vehicle shake, especially at idle and when you shift. The mount is meant to soak up the engine's normal movement, and once it cracks, that movement comes straight through the frame. It is a common repair and much easier caught early.
