Heating & A/C Repair in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
If your A/C blows warm or your heat never gets hot, the system has usually been getting weaker for a while, and on the A/C side low refrigerant almost always means a leak we can find and fix.
It always seems to quit on the first real scorcher: a hundred degrees, stuck behind a combine on a two-lane road near Hesston, with the vents blowing air the same temperature as the wind. Heat does the same on the first bitter January morning. We find the real cause in Hillsboro instead of just topping it up, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

We do not simply top it up. A sealed system does not use refrigerant, so if yours is low it went somewhere, and putting more in without finding out where buys you the same repair next summer. It also risks overcharging, which strains the compressor and can make the air warmer.
We recharge by weight, not by watching a gauge. The manufacturer specifies an exact amount, measured in grams on modern systems, and the tolerance is tighter than a gauge on a parts-store can can show.
We check the simple things first. A cabin filter full of cottonwood costs very little to replace and accounts for a surprising share of the weak-airflow complaints we hear.
Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with heating and A/C repair
-
We find the leak
Rather than topping it up and letting you discover the same problem next July.
-
Charged by weight, not by gauge
To the manufacturer's figure, because overcharging strains the compressor and can make the air warmer.
-
We check the cheap things first
A blocked cabin filter is a small bill. We would rather find that than sell you a compressor.
-
Warranty good at over 17,000 shops
Repairs carry the NAPA nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles.

What wears out heating and A/C around here
- Refrigerant that has leaked out, because a sealed system does not consume it
- A cabin filter clogged with a summer of cottonwood and field dust
- Gravel thrown up on county roads, which can damage the condenser at the front of the vehicle
- A blend door actuator that has failed, so the system mixes heat back in
- A blower motor or resistor on the way out
- A cooling fan not running, which shows up as warm air at a stop light
- A heater core or thermostat problem on the heating side
How we diagnose heating & air conditioning repair in Hillsboro
- We ask when it fails, because cold at speed and warm at idle is a completely different fault from weak all the time.
- We measure pressures on both sides of the system, which tells us whether we are chasing a charge problem, a restriction or a compressor.
- We pull the system into vacuum and watch whether it holds. A system that will not hold vacuum has a leak, and that settles the question before anyone spends time hunting.
- We find the leak properly, with dye and a UV lamp or an electronic detector, rather than guessing at the most likely fitting.
- On the heating side we check coolant level and condition, the thermostat, and whether the heater core is actually getting hot.
What we check
- High and low side pressures, running
- Compressor clutch engagement and belt condition
- Condenser for gravel damage and airflow obstruction
- Cabin air filter
- Blower motor, resistor and blend door operation
- Cooling fans
- Coolant level, condition and thermostat operation
What the repair usually is
- Repairing the leak, evacuating the system and recharging it to the manufacturer's weight
- Replacing a cabin filter, which is occasionally the entire problem
- Blend door actuator, blower motor or resistor replacement
- Condenser or compressor replacement
- Thermostat or heater core work on the heating side

Heating and A/C repair questions we hear every week
Can I just use one of those top-up cans?
You can, and sometimes it helps for a while, but there are two catches. The leak is still there, so you will be doing it again. Most of those cans also contain a stop-leak compound that can set up inside the system and contaminate a shop's recovery equipment, which turns a small repair into a larger one. Text us first and we will tell you honestly.
Why is it cold when I'm driving and warm at a stop light?
That pattern usually points at airflow across the condenser, the small radiator at the front of the vehicle, rather than at the A/C itself. At speed, air moves through it on its own. At a stop light a cooling fan has to do that job, and if the fan is not running you get exactly this symptom.
My heat takes forever to warm up. Is that normal?
A few minutes on a cold morning is normal, but most of the drive is not. The usual cause is a thermostat stuck open, which stops the engine reaching its proper operating temperature. That costs you fuel as well as comfort, so it is worth sorting out before the first real cold snap.
