AC Goes Cold Then Warm in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

An A/C that starts cold and turns warm partway through a drive is usually icing up inside the dash, or its compressor is cutting out once things get hot.

You pull out of Hillsboro on a July afternoon with the vents blowing lovely cold air, and by the time you are halfway to Wichita on I-135 it has turned lukewarm and a little feeble. Park for a while and it comes back cold, which is exactly the pattern that tells us where to look. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix an A/C that goes cold then warm

  1. We let it fail in front of us. A fading A/C is often perfect for the first ten minutes, which is when most quick checks happen, so we keep it running until it shows us its trick.

  2. We fix whatever is letting the ice form or the pressure climb. That might be a small leak, a clogged filter, a sensor or a clutch, and each one is a different repair with a different bill.

  3. We take a hot engine seriously. If the A/C is quitting because the engine is overheating, we tell you plainly and fix the cooling problem first.

  4. You approve every repair before we start, and nothing gets replaced on a hunch.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, as long as the temperature gauge stays where it normally sits.

A fading A/C is usually a comfort problem, and you can keep driving while you book it in. The exception is when the air warms up because the engine is running hot. If the gauge is climbing, switch the A/C off and the heater on full to pull heat away from the engine, and pull over somewhere safe if it keeps rising. Babies, older passengers and pets feel a Kansas summer quickly, so plan short trips until it is fixed.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The temperature gauge climbs toward hot or a warning light comes on
  • You see steam or smell something sweet or burning from under the hood
  • The compressor starts grinding, screeching or rattling loudly
  • Someone in the vehicle feels faint or sick in the heat

What makes an A/C fade around here
  • An evaporator that freezes up, often because the charge is slightly low or moisture got into the system
  • A cabin air filter packed with harvest dust, which starves the evaporator of warm air and helps it ice over
  • A compressor clutch with a worn gap that grips when cool and slips once it gets hot
  • A condenser clogged with chaff and bugs, so pressure climbs on hot days until the system shuts itself off
  • A faulty temperature sensor or expansion valve that stops controlling the cold properly
  • An engine running warm, which makes the vehicle turn the A/C off to protect itself
How we diagnose an ac that goes cold then warm in Hillsboro
  1. We ask how long it stays cold, whether the airflow drops too and what the temperature gauge does, because each answer points somewhere different.
  2. We run the system for a good long while in the bay with gauges connected, so we see the fault happen rather than guessing from a cold start.
  3. We measure the air coming out of the vents over time and watch for the evaporator icing over.
  4. We check the compressor clutch gap and watch whether it lets go once it heats up.
  5. We check the condenser and the cooling fans, and we look at the engine's cooling system if the gauge has been creeping.

Questions about an A/C that goes cold then warm

Why is there water dripping under my car?

Clear water dripping under the passenger side is normal when the A/C is running, because the system pulls moisture out of the air. A sudden big puddle after the air went warm can mean ice melted off the evaporator. If the drip is colored, oily or smells sweet, it is not A/C water, so text us a photo.

Is this the same problem as an A/C that is only cold on the highway?

It is a different problem. An A/C that fades over time is usually icing or cutting out from heat, while one that is warm at every stop light and cold on the highway usually has an airflow problem at the front of the vehicle. Tell us which pattern you see, because it points us straight at the right part.

Will a recharge fix it?

Sometimes a slightly low charge is the cause, but adding refrigerant without checking can easily overfill it, and overfilling makes this exact symptom worse. We measure the charge first and find out whether it leaked, so you only pay once.
