Tune-Ups & Spark Plugs in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

If your engine shakes at a stop light, stumbles when you press the gas or has quietly started drinking more fuel, the spark plugs or the coils that fire them are the usual place to start.

A tune-up used to mean points, plugs and a timing light, but on a modern engine the computer handles timing and there is nothing left to adjust. What remains is the ignition system, and you feel it failing long before a light comes on. It is the pickup that coughs and shudders on a cold morning as you pull out of the driveway in Hillsboro, then smooths out once it warms up. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What a tune-up at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We find the cylinder, and the reason, before we sell you anything. A single failing coil is a common and inexpensive repair, and replacing all of them because one failed is a cost nobody needs to carry.

  2. We fit the plug your engine actually calls for, gapped to specification. Plugs are not interchangeable the way they used to be, and the wrong heat range or electrode material will run badly and can damage an engine over time.

  3. We ask why a plug failed, not just whether it did. Plugs fouled with oil or coolant are a symptom of something else, and we will tell you what that is.

  4. We move a flashing light to the front of the line. If your check engine light is flashing rather than steady, tell us on the phone, because that usually means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter.

Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with tune-ups and spark plugs

  • We find the cylinder

A misfire names itself in the data. You pay for the coil that failed, not for a set of six.

  • The right plug, gapped properly

Heat range and electrode material matter on a modern engine. We fit what the manufacturer specifies.

  • We check why it failed

Plugs fouled with oil or coolant are a symptom of something else. Replacing them without asking why is a repair that returns.

  • Warranty in writing

Most repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and engine and transmission work carries Moxie's own one-year warranty. We tell you which one covers your repair before any work starts.

What causes misfires around here
  • Spark plugs worn past their gap, which makes the coil work harder to fire them
  • An ignition coil breaking down, usually under load before it fails outright
  • Lots of short trips in cold weather, which never let the engine warm up fully
  • A vacuum leak leaning out one cylinder
  • Dirty or failing fuel injectors
  • Carbon build-up on the intake valves, common on direct-injection engines
How we diagnose tune-up & spark plug replacement in Hillsboro
  1. We read the codes first, because a misfire code usually names the cylinder and that narrows the work immediately.
  2. We look at live data while the engine runs and watch which cylinder is actually contributing less, which catches a weak coil before it sets a code.
  3. We swap a suspect coil to a different cylinder and see whether the misfire follows it. That is a five-minute test that saves buying a set of coils.
  4. We pull the plugs and read them, because a plug tells you a great deal about what has been happening in that cylinder, such as oil, coolant, running rich or running hot.
  5. We check compression if a cylinder is still down after the ignition side is sound, because at that point the problem is mechanical.
What we check
  • Spark plug condition, gap and heat range
  • Ignition coils and boots
  • Misfire counts per cylinder
  • Fuel trims, which reveal vacuum leaks the codes do not name
  • Air filter and intake for restriction and leaks
What the repair usually is
  • Spark plug replacement with the correct plug for the engine, gapped to specification
  • Individual coil replacement, or the set where they are all of an age
  • Repairing a vacuum leak
  • Fuel injector cleaning or replacement
  • Intake valve cleaning on direct-injection engines where carbon is the cause

Tune-up and spark plug questions we hear every week

How often do spark plugs need changing?

It varies enormously from engine to engine. Copper plugs might want changing every 30,000 miles, while modern iridium plugs in the right engine can go 100,000. Your owner's manual has the number for yours, and we work from that rather than a generic interval. Text us your year and model if you want us to check.

Does a tune-up improve fuel economy?

It does if something was actually wrong, sometimes noticeably. If the ignition system was already healthy, it will not, and we will tell you that rather than take your money. Worn plugs and a weak coil genuinely cost fuel, but new plugs in a healthy engine cannot create economy that was not there.

My check engine light is flashing. Is that different?

It is different, and it matters. A steady light means the vehicle logged a fault. A flashing light usually means an active misfire severe enough to dump raw fuel into the exhaust, which destroys catalytic converters. Stop driving it and call us, and we can arrange to come and get it.
