Text us which onesHow we fix a diesel knock at Moxie
We tell you which kind of knock you have. Normal diesel sound, a fuel system problem and something serious inside the engine mean very different things for your wallet.
We start outside the engine. Loose heat shields and worn pulleys can imitate a knock, and they are a much happier discovery than a worn bearing.
We test compression before we talk about anything major. If the evidence points deep inside the engine, we prove it before we quote a big repair.
We explain what we found in plain words and give you a price, and nothing is done until you approve it. If the noise turns out to be normal, we will say so.

Can I keep driving?
A light knock can be driven in carefully. A deep knock with low oil pressure cannot.
A louder clatter from an injector or poor fuel usually lets you drive gently to a shop. A deep, heavy knock from low in the engine can be a worn bearing, and continuing to drive on it can destroy the engine. If the knock is deep, or the oil light comes on, shut the engine off and have the truck collected instead.
Stop driving and call us if
- The oil pressure warning comes on or the gauge drops
- A deep, heavy knock that gets louder with engine speed
- Metal flakes on the dipstick or in the oil
- Heavy smoke, or the engine loses power fast
Paying for it
This is one of the repairs people put off because of what it costs, and putting it off usually makes it worse. You can split it into payments and get the vehicle back on the road now, with Affirm, Sunbit, Synchrony Car Care, NAPA EasyPay and more, including options for credit that is still being built.

What causes diesel knock around here
- A sticking, leaking or worn fuel injector that fires fuel at the wrong moment or in the wrong amount
- Poor-quality fuel, or water in the fuel from a tank that sat through a humid summer
- Air in the fuel system, often after a filter change or running the tank too low
- Low oil level or pressure, which leaves moving parts without enough cushion
- Worn connecting rod or main bearings deep inside the engine
- A worn piston, wrist pin or a valve problem
- Something outside the engine, such as a heat shield shaken loose on gravel roads or a failing pulley, that sounds like a knock
How we diagnose a diesel knock in Hillsboro
- We listen to the engine ourselves, cold and warm, idling and under load, because when the knock happens tells us a lot.
- We read the engine computer and run injector balance tests, which show if one injector is doing more or less than its share.
- We pin down where the noise lives with a mechanic's stethoscope, and check belts, pulleys and heat shields that can imitate a knock.
- We check the oil level, pressure and condition, and look for metal in the oil.
- Where the evidence points deep inside the engine, we test compression before discussing any major repair.
What we check
- Fuel injectors and injector balance
- Fuel filter, water separator and fuel quality
- Oil level, pressure and condition
- Belts, pulleys and heat shields
- Compression on each cylinder where needed
- Stored codes and live engine data
What the repair usually is
- Replacing fuel filters and draining water from the fuel
- Injector repair or replacement
- Bleeding air from the fuel system
- Replacing a loose heat shield or worn pulley that was making the noise
- Internal engine repair when testing confirms bearing or piston wear

Diesel knock questions we hear every week
Is it normal for a diesel engine to knock?
Some clatter is normal, because a diesel lights its fuel by squeezing it rather than with a spark, and that is noisier. The normal sound is steady and even. A knock that is new, louder or uneven, or that comes with smoke, power loss or low oil pressure, is not normal. Text us a short video of it and we will tell you honestly what we hear.
Can a bad injector cause a diesel knock?
A faulty injector is one of the most common causes of a louder diesel knock. If it sprays too much fuel, sprays at the wrong time or drips, that cylinder burns harder than the others and knocks. An injector balance test shows which one it is, so only the bad injector needs attention.
How much does it cost to fix a diesel knock?
It depends on the cause, which can be anything from a fuel filter or an injector to a repair inside the engine. That range is exactly why we test before quoting. Call or text (620) 416-0008 and we will explain what the diagnosis involves, and you approve any repair price before we start.
