Check Engine Light Diagnosis in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A check engine light means the engine computer has logged a fault, anything from a loose fuel cap to a misfire, and the only way to know which is to test the vehicle properly.

It looks exactly the same for hundreds of different problems. It always seems to come on at the worst time, too, like halfway to McPherson with a load of kids and a ball game to get to. Steady means book it soon, and flashing means stop. Either way, bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What check engine light diagnosis looks like at Moxie

  1. We diagnose it instead of reading it. Reading a code and replacing the part it mentions is not diagnosis, and it is how people end up buying three sensors to fix one problem.

  2. We follow the code to the real cause. A code tells you which circuit reported something wrong, not whether the part failed, the wiring failed, or the part is reporting a genuine problem somewhere else. An oxygen sensor code is very often not a bad oxygen sensor.

  3. We charge for that time honestly. Then we tell you what we found and what the repair will cost before we touch anything.

Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with check engine light diagnosis

  • Dealer-level diagnostics

We read and program the same systems the dealership does, without the dealership wait.

  • We test before we replace

You pay for the part that was actually broken, not for the three we tried first.

  • Warranty in writing

Most repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and engine and transmission work carries Moxie's own one-year warranty. We tell you which one covers your repair before any work starts.

  • We pick your vehicle up

Diagnosis takes time. We will collect the vehicle so you are not waiting on it.

Can I keep driving?

A steady light means book it in. A flashing light means stop.

A steady check engine light usually means the vehicle has logged a fault but is still running within safe limits. You can generally drive it, and you should get it looked at in the next week or so rather than ignoring it, because small faults become expensive ones. A flashing light is different. It normally means the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter, which is one of the more expensive parts on the vehicle.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The light is flashing
  • The engine is running rough, shaking or losing power
  • There is a smell of fuel, or smoke from the exhaust
  • The temperature gauge is climbing at the same time

What usually turns the check engine light on around here
  • A loose, cracked or missing fuel cap, which is genuinely one of the most common causes
  • A failing oxygen sensor, which affects how much fuel the engine uses
  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils causing a misfire
  • A vacuum leak letting unmeasured air into the engine, often from a hose cracked by summer heat
  • A dirty airflow sensor or clogged air filter after a dusty harvest season on gravel roads
  • A failing catalytic converter, often the result of a misfire left too long
How we track down a check engine light in Hillsboro
  1. We read the stored codes, which tells us which system reported a problem. That is the starting point, not the answer.
  2. We watch the live data the engine computer is seeing while the vehicle runs, because a sensor reading wrong is very different from a part that has failed.
  3. We reproduce the conditions the fault happens under where we can, so we are testing the actual problem rather than a theory about it.
  4. We test the specific component with a meter or scope before condemning it, rather than replacing parts in order of likelihood.
  5. We clear the code and confirm the fault does not return before the vehicle goes back to you.
What we check besides the code
  • Stored and pending trouble codes across every module, not just the engine
  • Live sensor data under load and at idle
  • Ignition system, including plugs and coils
  • Fuel trim values, which reveal leaks the codes do not name
  • Exhaust and emissions components
  • Wiring and connectors at the suspect circuit

Check engine light questions we hear every week

The parts store read my code for free. Why do you charge?

Those are two different jobs. A free code read tells you the number the vehicle stored. Diagnosis is the testing that works out which of several possible causes produced that number, and it is the part that stops you buying something you did not need. We would rather charge you once for the right answer than let you guess three times.

Can I just ignore it if the vehicle drives fine?

You can for a while, and plenty of people do. The catch is that the light is now busy and cannot warn you about the next problem, and some faults quietly damage expensive parts while the vehicle still feels normal. A misfire slowly eating a catalytic converter is the classic example. Text us the code if you have it.

Will the light go off on its own?

It sometimes does, if the condition that set it stops happening. That does not mean the fault is fixed, only that the vehicle is not seeing it right now. The code usually stays stored, which is one of the first things we look at. Call or text (620) 416-0008 and we will take a proper look.
