Differential & 4x4 Service in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Differential and 4x4 service means changing the gear oil in your axles and transfer case and making sure your four-wheel drive engages when you ask it to.

The differential is the round gearbox in the middle of an axle that lets the wheels on each side turn at different speeds around a corner. The transfer case is the gearbox that sends power to the front wheels when you switch into four-wheel drive. Most people find out theirs is not working on the first snowy morning, halfway up a muddy field drive with a load of feed on the back. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What differential and 4x4 service looks like at Moxie

  1. We change the gear oil the way your manufacturer specifies. Some differentials need a special additive for their limited-slip clutches, and the wrong oil can make them chatter and groan in corners.

  2. We test your four-wheel drive while the truck is here. A lot of people only learn their 4x4 does not work on the first icy morning of the year or in a muddy field, which is the worst possible time to find out.

  3. We look for the leak behind the low oil. A clogged vent or a weeping seal will empty fresh oil just as fast as the old, so we fix the cause while we are in there.

  4. If we hear worn parts, we tell you straight. You get what it is, how urgent it is and what it costs, and you decide what happens next.

What wears out differentials and 4x4 systems around here
  • Gear oil that has broken down with summer heat, towing and heavy loads
  • Water getting in through the axle vents after crossing flooded low-water crossings or deep ditches
  • Leaking pinion or axle seals that let the oil level drop
  • Worn bearings or gears inside the differential
  • A 4x4 actuator, switch or sensor that has failed, so the system never engages
  • Four-wheel drive that sits unused from one winter to the next, letting parts seize
How we diagnose differential and 4x4 problems in Hillsboro
  1. We road test to hear when the noise happens, because a whine on acceleration and a whine on deceleration point to different wear.
  2. We check the gear oil level and condition in each differential and the transfer case, looking for metal, water or a burnt smell.
  3. We test the four-wheel-drive system by engaging it, and scan for codes if it will not engage.
  4. We look for leaks at every seal and vent, since low oil is behind many differential failures.
What we check on your drivetrain
  • Front and rear differential gear oil
  • Transfer case fluid and its seals
  • Pinion and axle seals, and the differential cover gasket
  • Axle vents, which can clog and push oil out of the seals
  • 4x4 switches, actuators, locking hubs and shift motors
  • Stored codes from the four-wheel-drive system
What the service or repair usually turns out to be
  • Changing differential and transfer case gear oil with the correct type, including friction additive where required
  • Replacing a leaking pinion seal, axle seal or cover gasket
  • Repairing a 4x4 actuator, shift motor, switch or locking hub
  • Differential bearing or gear repair when the noise comes from worn parts
  • Transfer case repair when it slips, grinds or will not shift

Differential and 4x4 service questions we hear every week

How often should differential fluid be changed?

Many manufacturers suggest somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, and sooner if you tow, haul heavy loads or drive through water. Your owner's manual has the exact number for your vehicle. If you do not know when it was last changed, it is a quick and inexpensive thing to check, and we are happy to take a look.

Why is my 4x4 not engaging?

It is often an electrical part rather than the gears themselves. A failed switch, actuator, shift motor or locking hub can each stop four-wheel drive from engaging, and low or old transfer case fluid can too. We scan the system and test each part, so we replace only what has actually failed. Get it checked before winter sets in.

Is a whining differential dangerous to drive on?

A faint whine usually means wear you have time to plan around, not an emergency. Loud grinding, a clunk or a burning smell is different, because a differential that locks up can stop a wheel from turning. Call or text (620) 416-0008 and describe the noise, and we will tell you honestly how soon to bring it in.
