Engine Misfire in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A misfire means one of the engine's cylinders is not burning its fuel properly, and it is most often a worn spark plug, a failing ignition coil or a clogged injector.
Imagine pulling a loaded trailer up the long grade out of the Cottonwood valley and feeling a stutter, like the engine skipped a beat, every time you ask for power. That skip is a cylinder sitting out. Left alone, it gets worse and starts damaging other parts, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix an engine misfire
We find the one part that failed. Swapping parts between cylinders shows us exactly what is at fault, so you pay for one coil instead of six.
We check the neighbors. If the plugs are due, or another coil is weak, we tell you, and you decide whether to do them now or later.
We look after the catalytic converter. A misfire caught early saves it, and we check that it has not already been damaged.
Then we drive it the way it failed. If it misfired under load, we test it under load before we hand back the keys.

Can I keep driving?
Gently and not far if the light is steady. Not at all if it is flashing.
A light misfire with a steady check engine light will usually get you to the shop if you drive gently and skip the towing. Once the light flashes, the misfire is bad enough to damage the catalytic converter, so pull over safely and let us come and get it. Either way, a misfire does not fix itself.
Stop driving and call us if
- The check engine light is flashing
- The engine shakes hard or loses a lot of power
- You smell raw fuel or see smoke from the exhaust
- The misfire started after the engine overheated

What causes a misfire around here
- Worn spark plugs that have gone past their service interval
- A failed ignition coil, often cooked by years of summer heat under the hood
- A clogged or leaking fuel injector
- A vacuum leak from a cracked hose, which leans out one or more cylinders
- Moisture in the ignition after a heavy rain or deep water on a flooded road
- Low compression from a worn valve, ring or head gasket, which is less common but more serious
How we diagnose an engine misfire in Hillsboro
- We read which cylinder is misfiring and how often, using live data rather than a single code.
- We swap the coil or plug with a healthy cylinder and see whether the misfire follows it, which proves the part is at fault.
- We test injectors and look for vacuum leaks on the affected side of the engine.
- If the parts check out, we test compression to see whether the problem is inside the engine.
- Then we show you what we found and what it costs before any work starts.

Misfire questions we hear every week
What does an engine misfire feel like?
It usually feels like a stutter, a jerk or a skip, especially when you accelerate or climb a hill. At idle it can feel like a rough, uneven shake. Some drivers describe it as the engine briefly running out of breath.
Is a misfire expensive to fix?
Most misfires are fixed with a spark plug, an ignition coil or an injector, which are ordinary repairs. It gets expensive when a misfire is ignored long enough to damage the catalytic converter, or when the cause is inside the engine. We diagnose first and give you the price before any work starts.
How is a misfire different from a rough idle or engine shaking?
A misfire is a cause, while a rough idle and engine shaking are symptoms you feel. A misfire is one of the most common reasons for both, but they can also come from air leaks or worn engine mounts. That is why we test before we replace anything.
