Power Steering Repair in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

If your steering has suddenly gone heavy, whines when you turn, or a steering warning light is on, your power steering is losing its help.

It is usually a leak, a worn pump or an electrical fault, and we can fix all three. You can still steer without it, but it takes real muscle. You notice it most when you are backing a pickup up to the grain elevator or squeezing into a parking spot downtown in Hillsboro, and the wheel fights you the whole way. Older vehicles and most trucks use a hydraulic pump, while many newer cars use an electric motor, and we repair both. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What power steering repair at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We find the real cause before we recommend parts. A whining pump is often just low on fluid because of an inexpensive hose leak, and refilling it without fixing the leak only buys you a week.

  2. We work on both hydraulic and electric power steering. Electric systems depend on the vehicle's computers, so we use dealer-level diagnostics to read the steering module and test the motor and sensors directly.

  3. We check the neighbors too. Heavy or wandering steering can come from a worn tie rod or a stiff joint, so we look at the whole front end before blaming the pump.

  4. You approve the repair and the price before we start. Afterward we check the steering feel and the alignment, so the vehicle drives straight and turns easily.

What wears out power steering around here
  • Hoses and seals that crack after years of Kansas heat and cold, letting fluid leak out
  • A worn power steering pump, which whines when it struggles, often after running low on fluid
  • Old, dirty fluid that no longer lubricates the pump and rack well
  • A worn or loose drive belt that turns the pump, which tends to slip and squeal on cold mornings
  • A failed sensor, motor or control module on an electric power steering system
  • Low battery or charging voltage, which can switch electric power steering off and shows up most in winter
How we diagnose power steering problems in Hillsboro
  1. We find out which kind of power steering your vehicle has, because hydraulic and electric systems fail in different ways.
  2. On hydraulic systems, we check the fluid level and condition and trace any leak to its source.
  3. We listen to the pump while turning the wheel and check the belt that drives it.
  4. On electric systems, we read the steering module codes and check the battery and charging voltage.
  5. We check the steering rack, tie rods and suspension, since a stiff joint can also make steering heavy.
What we check
  • Power steering fluid level, color and smell
  • Pump, hoses, lines and the reservoir
  • The steering rack or steering gearbox for leaks and play
  • The drive belt and its tensioner
  • Electric power steering codes, motor and sensors
  • Battery and charging voltage
What the repair usually is
  • Replacing a leaking pressure or return hose
  • Replacing a worn power steering pump
  • Replacing a leaking steering rack or gearbox
  • Flushing old fluid and refilling with the correct type
  • Replacing a worn drive belt
  • Repairing or recalibrating an electric power steering component

Power steering repair questions we hear every week

Is it safe to drive with the power steering out?

You can still steer, but it takes far more effort, especially at low speed, and a sudden loss of assist halfway through a turn can catch you off guard. On a hydraulic system, running the pump dry can also damage it further. Drive gently if you must, or call us and we will pick it up.

Why does my steering whine when I turn?

A whine that gets louder as you turn is usually a hydraulic power steering pump that is low on fluid or wearing out. Low fluid almost always means a leak somewhere, so topping it up is only a temporary fix. We find the leak and check the pump, so the whine does not come straight back.

How much does power steering repair cost?

It depends on which part has failed and which kind of system you have. A leaking hose is a fairly small repair, while a steering rack or an electric steering unit costs a good deal more. We diagnose it first and give you the price before any work begins. Call or text (620) 416-0008 to book.
