Car Battery Keeps Dying in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

When a battery keeps dying, even a new one, it is usually the victim, and the real culprit is a charging problem, a hidden drain or lots of short trips.

We hear it from folks around Marion County all the time: new battery in August, dead again by October, and the parts counter swears the old one tested fine too. The pattern of when it dies is the clue we need, so pay attention to that. Then bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we stop a battery from dying again

  1. We treat the battery as a witness, not a suspect. A battery that keeps dying is telling us something else is wrong, and we find that before selling you another one.

  2. We test the whole system. The battery, the alternator, the cables and the draw with the key off all get checked, so we are not fixing one cause while another stays hidden.

  3. We track drains to the source. If something is staying awake after you lock up, we follow it circuit by circuit until we find it.

  4. You approve it first. We tell you what we found, what it costs and what can wait.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, if it starts, but get it tested before it lets you down somewhere worse.

A battery that keeps dying is more of an inconvenience than a danger, as long as it is only dying while parked. If it dies while you are driving, or the battery light comes on, the alternator may have quit and the car could shut off on the road. In that case, get off the road safely and call us.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The battery warning light comes on while you drive
  • The engine stalls or the dash goes dark while moving
  • The battery is hot, swollen or smells like rotten eggs
  • You smell burning plastic from under the hood or dash

What keeps killing car batteries around here
  • An alternator that is weak or failing, so the battery never fully recharges
  • A parasitic drain, like a stuck relay, a glovebox light or an aftermarket accessory
  • Mostly short trips around town that never replace the charge used to start
  • A battery that is the wrong size or type for the vehicle
  • Corroded terminals or a bad ground that stops it charging properly
  • Vehicles that sit between uses, like a pickup parked until the next harvest
How we diagnose a car battery that keeps dying in Hillsboro
  1. We ask when it dies, because overnight, after a week, and while driving each point somewhere different.
  2. We load-test the battery and check it is the right size for the vehicle.
  3. We test the alternator's output with the lights, fan and defroster on.
  4. We let the vehicle go to sleep and measure how much power it draws while off.
  5. If there is a drain, we track it down to the circuit, then show you what we found.

Questions about a battery that keeps dying

Why does my new battery keep dying?

A new battery that keeps dying is almost always a sign of something else. A weak alternator, a drain while parked, or lots of short trips will flatten a new battery just as quickly as the old one. We test all three to find which it is.

Can a bad alternator drain a battery overnight?

It can, though it is less common. An alternator with a failed internal part can leak power back out of the battery while the car is off. More often, a weak alternator just fails to recharge the battery while you drive. Either way, we test it.

My truck only gets driven a few times a month. Is that why?

It might be. Every vehicle uses a small amount of power while parked, and over a few weeks that adds up, especially on an older battery. A battery maintainer plugged in while it sits can help, and we can tell you whether the draw is normal or too high.
