Heater Core & Blower Motor Repair in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

If your vehicle blows cold air in winter, or no air at all, the cause is usually the heater core or the blower motor.

The heater core is the small radiator behind the dashboard that makes the heat, and the blower motor is the fan that pushes it into the cabin. You know the morning: ten degrees, kids bundled in the back for the school run in Hillsboro, and you are scraping frost off the inside of the windshield with a credit card while the vents breathe lukewarm air. We work out which part failed before anything gets taken apart, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What heater core and blower motor repair at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We find out which part has actually failed before we quote. Heater problems get guessed at a lot, and guessing on this system is expensive, because a heater core can take hours to reach while a resistor can take minutes.

  2. We tell you plainly what a heater core job involves. On many vehicles the dashboard has to come partly out to reach it, which is why labor is the big part of the price. Sometimes a flush brings a clogged core back, and we will say when that is worth trying.

  3. We tell you what it needs and what it costs, and nothing is done until you approve it.

  4. We do not let a leaking heater core slide. Coolant is not something you want to be breathing, and the film on the glass makes it hard to see out of at night.

What wears out heaters and fans around here
  • A heater core that is clogged inside, often from old or mixed coolant, so hot coolant cannot flow through it
  • A heater core that has started leaking coolant into the cabin
  • Low coolant, or air trapped in the cooling system, so the heater core never fills
  • A thermostat stuck open, so the engine never gets warm enough to make heat on a cold morning
  • A blower motor resistor that has failed, which is the classic cause of a fan that only works on high
  • A worn blower motor, or a leaf or mouse nest caught in the fan, which is common on vehicles parked near fields or in sheds
  • A blend door actuator, the small motor that mixes hot and cold air, stuck on cold
How we find a heater or fan fault
  1. We ask what you are noticing, because no heat with a strong fan is a different fault from warm air that barely trickles out.
  2. We check the coolant level and condition first, since low coolant is the cheapest cause and a common one.
  3. We measure the temperature of the two hoses going into the heater core. If one is hot and the other is cool, the core is blocked.
  4. We test the blower motor and its resistor with a meter at the connector, so we know whether the fan, the resistor or the wiring has failed.
  5. We look for coolant on the passenger floor and the tell-tale film on the glass before we call a heater core leak.
What we check on the heating system
  • Coolant level, condition and any signs of an external leak
  • Thermostat operation and engine warm-up temperature
  • Heater hoses in and out of the heater core
  • Blower motor, resistor or control module, and the wiring to them
  • Blend door operation from hot to cold
  • Cabin air filter and the fan housing for debris
What the repair usually is
  • Replacing a blower motor resistor, which is often a quick job
  • Replacing the blower motor or clearing debris out of the fan housing
  • Flushing a clogged heater core, where it will still flow
  • Replacing a leaking heater core, which on many vehicles means removing part of the dashboard
  • Replacing a thermostat or a blend door actuator
  • Topping up and bleeding air out of the cooling system after a repair

Heater core and blower motor questions we hear every week

Why does my car's fan only work on high?

That is almost always a failed blower motor resistor, the part that sets the lower fan speeds. The highest setting bypasses it, which is why that one still works. It is usually a straightforward repair, though a resistor that keeps failing can be a sign the blower motor is drawing too much current, so we check the motor at the same time.

Is it safe to drive with a leaking heater core?

It is not something to put off. A leaking heater core lets coolant into the cabin, which you breathe as a sweet-smelling vapor, and it fogs the windshield with a greasy film that is hard to see through. It also lets the engine run low on coolant, which can lead to overheating. Text us what you are seeing and we will get you in soon.

How much does heater core replacement cost?

The cost depends mostly on how hard the heater core is to reach on your vehicle. On some it sits behind a panel, and on others most of the dashboard has to come out, which is many hours of labor. Call or text us with the year, make and model, and we will tell you what yours involves before you commit.
