Computer Diagnostics in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Computer diagnostics means reading every computer in your vehicle and testing what they report, so we can tell you which part actually failed instead of guessing from a code.

A modern car runs a dozen or more of these computers, watching the engine, the brakes, the airbags and the transmission, and they write it down when something behaves oddly. Maybe another shop told you it has to go to the dealer, and you are already picturing a lost day on I-135. We can usually do it right here in Hillsboro, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What computer diagnostics at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We do the part most shops skip. Reading a code takes thirty seconds, and any parts store will do it free. Working out which of five possible causes produced that code takes testing, and that testing is what stops you buying three parts to fix one problem.

  2. We program as well as diagnose. A lot of modern repairs are not finished when the part is bolted on, because the vehicle has to be told the new part exists before it will use it. That applies to modules, batteries on many vehicles, and steering angle sensors after alignment work. Shops without the equipment have to send that to a dealership.

  3. We save you the drive. For most of Marion, Harvey, McPherson and Chase Counties the nearest dealership service department is a fifty-mile round trip at best, and that is before you find out they cannot look at it until a week on Tuesday. Doing this work in Hillsboro turns a lost day into an appointment.

Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with its computer diagnostics

  • We read what the dealership reads

The same systems, the same programming, without the dealership wait or the dealership bill.

  • We test before we replace

You pay for the part that was actually broken, not for the two we tried first.

  • Every module, not just the engine

Faults hide in the modules nobody checked. We read all of them as a matter of course.

  • Warranty in writing

Most repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and engine and transmission work carries Moxie's own one-year warranty. We tell you which one covers your repair before any work starts.

A free code read is not a diagnosis

A free code read A diagnosis at Moxie
Takes about thirty seconds Reads every module, not just the engine
Talks to the engine computer only Watches live data while the engine runs and under load
Gives you a number and a generic description Reproduces the fault so we are testing the real thing
Names the circuit that reported a problem Tests the suspect component directly before condemning it
Cannot tell you which of several causes produced it Tells you which part failed, and why it failed
Leads to replacing parts in order of price Confirms the fault is gone before the vehicle leaves

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.

1 code, 5 causes

A single lean-running code can be produced by a cracked hose, a dirty airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, an exhaust leak or a failed oxygen sensor. Replacing the part the code names is a one-in-five guess with your money.

What computer diagnostics turns up around here
  • A sensor reporting a genuine problem somewhere else in the system
  • A sensor that has failed and is reporting nonsense
  • A connector corroded by road salt and damp, so a working part cannot report
  • Wiring chewed by mice in a vehicle parked near a field or barn
  • Software in a control module that needs updating or reprogramming
  • Two faults at once, where the second one is hiding behind the first
How we run computer diagnostics in Hillsboro
  1. We read every module, not just the engine. A brake fault and a transmission complaint are often the same story told twice, and a reader that only talks to the engine misses half of it.
  2. We watch live data while the vehicle runs, because a moving number tells you far more than a still one. Fuel trims, sensor voltages and timing under load are where the answer usually is.
  3. We reproduce the fault where we can, so we are testing the actual problem rather than a theory about it.
  4. We test the suspect component directly with a meter or scope before condemning it, rather than replacing parts in order of likelihood.
  5. We clear the code and confirm it does not return before the vehicle goes back to you.
What we scan and test
  • Stored, pending and history codes across every control module
  • Live sensor data at idle and under load
  • Wiring, grounds and connectors at the circuit in question
  • Battery and charging voltage, which quietly causes faults everywhere else
  • Module software versions, where an update is the actual fix
What the repair usually turns out to be
  • Replacing the component that testing proved had failed
  • Repairing wiring, a ground or a corroded connector
  • Reprogramming or updating a control module
  • Programming a replacement part so the vehicle accepts it
  • Occasionally nothing at all, where the fault was a loose connection we put right

Computer diagnostics questions we hear every week

How is this different from the free code read at the parts store?

A free code read tells you the number your vehicle stored, which names the system that reported a problem. It does not tell you which of several possible causes produced it, and it usually cannot see anything outside the engine computer. Diagnosis is the testing that turns that number into an answer you can actually act on.

Another shop said only the dealer can fix my car. Do I have to drive to Wichita?

Usually you do not, and far less often than people are told. A lot of what gets sent to dealerships is programming rather than mechanical work, and that takes equipment, not magic. Before you commit to a round trip out of Marion County, call or text us with what you were told, and we will give you a straight answer about doing it here.

Why does diagnosis cost money when the repair might be small?

Finding the fault is the work. The part is often cheap, but knowing which part, out of the several that cause the same symptom, is what you are paying for. It is the difference between buying one component and buying three. Text (620) 416-0008 with what you are seeing and we will tell you how we would approach it.
