Grinding Brakes in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A grinding noise when you press the brake pedal is almost always metal touching metal, which usually means the brake pads have worn through and what is left is cutting into the rotor.
It is the school run in Hillsboro, the stop sign at the end of the block, and a sound like a shovel dragged across concrete from a car that was only squealing politely a few weeks ago. It is one of the few car noises that is almost never harmless, and waiting turns a brake job into a bigger one. Bring it in today, or better still, we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix grinding brakes at Moxie
We do not guess at a grinding noise. The noise tells you something is wrong but not which thing, and the difference between a stone in the dust shield and a seized caliper is the difference between a five-minute fix and a real repair.
We measure all four corners, not just the loud one. Pads and rotors get measured against the manufacturer's minimum, and every caliper gets checked for sticking, because a grinding front brake tells us nothing about the rears.
We tell you what we found before we pick up a wrench. You get what it needs, what it costs and what can wait, and nothing gets done until you say so.
We will tell you when you do not need something. If the pads have life left in them, we say so, and you can put the money somewhere it is actually needed.

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.
Can I keep driving?
Drive it straight to a shop, and not much further than that.
Grinding means you have already lost most of the friction material that stops the car. The brakes will still work, but they will not work as well as you expect them to, and the distance you need to stop has already got longer. Get it looked at today rather than at the weekend.

What causes grinding brakes around here
- Brake pads worn down to the backing plate, so steel is riding on the rotor
- A stuck caliper holding one pad against the rotor and wearing it out early, common after a wet, salty winter
- A stone or piece of gravel trapped between the rotor and the dust shield, which our roads supply plenty of
- A rusted or warped rotor, common on a vehicle that sits through a Kansas winter
- A failed wheel bearing, which can make a grinding noise that changes when you turn
How we diagnose grinding brake diagnosis in Hillsboro
- We ask you when the noise happens, whether braking, turning or all the time, because that narrows it a long way before we touch anything.
- We drive the vehicle and listen for ourselves, so we are diagnosing the noise you actually hear rather than the one we assumed.
- We pull the wheels off and measure the remaining pad material and the rotor thickness against the manufacturer's minimum.
- We check the calipers move freely and the slides are not seized, because a stuck caliper will eat a new set of pads too.
- We spin each hub by hand to feel for a rough or noisy wheel bearing, which can imitate a brake noise closely.
What we check
- Pad thickness on all four corners, not just the noisy one
- Rotor thickness, scoring and runout
- Caliper slides, pistons and boots
- Brake hoses and lines for cracking or swelling
- Brake fluid condition and level
- Wheel bearings and dust shields
What the repair usually is
- New pads and rotors on the affected axle, which is the usual outcome
- Caliper replacement or a slide service where one has seized
- Removing trapped debris, which is occasionally the whole repair
- Wheel bearing and hub replacement if the noise turns out not to be the brakes at all

Grinding brake questions we hear every week
Can I just put new pads on and leave the rotors?
You sometimes can, but usually not once the brakes have been grinding. By then the backing plate has cut into the rotor and scored its surface, and new pads on a scored rotor will not bed in properly and will wear quickly. We measure the rotor and tell you honestly whether it is still within the manufacturer's limits.
Why did it squeal for weeks before it started grinding?
Most pads have a small metal tab designed to squeal when the pad is getting low, and that squeal is the early warning. The grinding is what happens after the warning has gone on for a while and the friction material is gone. Next time you hear a squeal, text us and we will tell you whether it can wait.
How long can I leave it?
You should not leave it more than a day or two. Every trip cuts deeper into the rotor and adds to what the repair costs, and your stopping distance is already longer than it should be. If you can get it to us today, do. If you would rather not drive it, call and we will come and get it.
