Car Losing Power in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A car or truck that has lost power is usually short of fuel, short of air, misfiring, or in a protective limp mode that the computer switched on to save the engine.

You notice it merging onto US-50 near Newton, when you press the pedal to the floor and the vehicle just thinks about it for a while. Gas or diesel, the cause is usually findable and often cheaper than you fear. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we find where the power went

  1. We find out where the power is going. A clogged filter, a misfire and a slipping transmission can all feel like lost power, and they cost very different amounts to fix.

  2. We work on gas and diesel alike. Pickups, family cars and farm trucks all come through our doors, and diesel trucks get the extra checks their turbos and exhaust filters need.

  3. We check the cheap causes first. Plenty of weak engines come back to life with a new air or fuel filter, and we will tell you if that is all it needs.

  4. You approve the price before we start. Afterward we road-test it under the conditions that caused the problem.

Can I keep driving?

Gently, to a shop, and without towing.

Most power loss will still get you across town if you take it easy. It is risky on the highway, because you may not be able to merge or pass safely, and pushing an engine that is protecting itself can turn a small fault into a large one. Keep the trailer at home, avoid busy roads, and get it looked at this week.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The check engine light is flashing
  • The temperature gauge climbs or the oil light comes on

What steals engine power around here
  • A clogged air filter after harvest dust and gravel roads, which chokes the engine
  • A clogged fuel filter or a weak fuel pump, especially after a tank of poor fuel
  • A misfire from worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil
  • A dirty airflow sensor or other sensor giving the computer bad readings
  • A clogged catalytic converter, which backs up the exhaust
  • On diesels, a leaking boost hose, a sticking turbo or a full exhaust filter
  • A slipping transmission, which feels like lost power but is not the engine
How we diagnose a car losing power in Hillsboro
  1. We ask when it happens, all the time, only under load, or only when hot, because that narrows it before we lift the hood.
  2. We read every module with dealer-level diagnostics, including limp-mode history a basic reader cannot see.
  3. We road-test it and watch live fuel, air and spark data while the power drops.
  4. We check the filters, the exhaust for a blockage and, on turbo engines, the boost system for leaks.
  5. We confirm whether it is the engine or the transmission before recommending anything.

Loss of power questions we hear every week

Why does my car lose power going uphill?

Hills ask the engine for everything it has, so weak spots show up there first. A clogged filter, a weak fuel pump or a misfire may go unnoticed on flat ground and become obvious on a grade. A slipping transmission can also feel this way, and we test both.

What is limp mode?

Limp mode is the computer cutting power on purpose because it has detected a fault that could damage the engine or transmission. It lets you get to a shop slowly and safely. Drive gently, avoid the highway if you can, and text us so we can read what triggered it.

My diesel truck is losing power. Is this the right page?

This page covers gas and diesel vehicles in general. Diesels have a few causes all their own, such as the turbo and the exhaust filter, and our diesel loss of power page goes into those in more detail. Either way, we can diagnose and fix it here in Hillsboro.
