Bent Wheel in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A bent wheel usually shows up as a new vibration, or a tire that slowly loses air, right after you hit a pothole, a curb or a hidden washout.

It is the dip on a county road after a spring storm that you did not see until the whole truck bounced, followed a few miles later by a shimmy in the steering wheel that was not there this morning. A hit that bends a wheel can also hurt the tire or knock out the alignment, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we handle a bent wheel at Moxie

  1. We check more than the wheel. A hit hard enough to bend a wheel can also damage the tire, knock out the alignment or bend a steering part, and we want to find all of it at once.

  2. We tell you straight whether the wheel can stay. A cracked or badly bent wheel has to be replaced, and so does a tire with a bulge. We will not balance around a problem and send you on your way.

  3. We put it right and prove it. You approve the repair first, and afterwards we balance it, check the alignment and road-test it at speed.

  4. We look after drivers across Marion, Harvey, McPherson, Chase and Lyon Counties, where the roads find new ways to test your wheels every spring.

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.

Can I keep driving?

Gently to the shop, if the tire holds air and it does not shake badly.

A mild bend with a small vibration will usually get you to us at a sensible speed. A cracked wheel, a tire with a bulge, or a shake that makes the steering hard to hold is different, because the tire or the wheel could fail. In that case, put the spare on or call us instead of driving.

Stop driving and call us if

  • You can see a crack in the wheel
  • The tire has a bulge or bubble on its side
  • The shake is strong or getting worse quickly
  • The tire will not hold air

What bends wheels around here
  • Potholes after the freeze and thaw of a Kansas winter
  • Washouts and deep ruts on gravel roads after heavy rain
  • Curbs and parking blocks, especially in the dark
  • Railroad crossings and cattle guards taken a little too fast
  • Low tire pressure, which lets the wheel take a hit the tire should have cushioned
How we diagnose a bent wheel in Hillsboro
  1. We inspect the wheel inside and out for bends, flat spots and cracks.
  2. We spin it on our balancer to see whether it runs true, which shows bends you cannot see by eye.
  3. We check the tire for bulges, cuts and damage on the inside.
  4. We check the steering, suspension and alignment, since a hit hard enough to bend a wheel can knock those out too.
  5. Then we tell you what took the damage and what it will cost to put right.

Bent wheel questions we hear every week

Can a bent wheel be repaired?

A small bend can sometimes be straightened by a wheel repair specialist, but a cracked wheel or a badly bent one must be replaced. It depends on where the bend is and how bad it is. We tell you honestly which you have, and we never balance around a bend and call it fixed.

Why does my tire keep losing air after I hit a pothole?

The hit probably bent the edge of the wheel where the tire seals against it, so air seeps out at the bend. It may also have cut the tire from the inside. We dip the wheel in water to find exactly where it is leaking.

Do I need an alignment after hitting a pothole?

You may, especially if the car now pulls or the steering wheel sits crooked. A hit hard enough to bend a wheel can easily knock the alignment out, and driving on it wears your tires quickly. We check it on our Hunter equipment and tell you whether it moved.
