Diesel Diagnostics in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Diesel diagnostics is the testing that finds out exactly why your truck is smoking, losing power, starting hard or showing a warning light, before any parts get replaced.

That matters more on a diesel than on most vehicles, because injectors, turbos and emissions parts are expensive, and several of them cause the same symptom. Think of the truck that only stumbles while pulling a full load up I-135 and then runs perfectly the moment it rolls into a shop. We diagnose Power Stroke, Cummins and Duramax trucks right here in Hillsboro, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What diesel diagnostics at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We find the fault before we recommend a repair. Diesel parts are expensive enough that one wrong guess can cost more than the diagnosis many times over.

  2. We catch the sneaky problems in the act. Many diesel faults only show up while the truck is pulling weight, so where we can, we watch the data under load.

  3. We explain what we found in plain words. You will know what failed, why it failed and what can wait, and nothing is done until you approve the work and the price.

  4. We work for farms, ranches, contractors and fleets across Marion, Harvey, McPherson, Chase and Lyon Counties. Businesses with two or more trucks can join Moxie Fleet Priority for priority scheduling and a dedicated fleet technician. Our diesel diagnostics cover medium-duty trucks and farm equipment as well as pickups.

1 symptom, many causes

Loss of power on a diesel can come from a boost leak, a sticking turbo, a clogged fuel filter, a worn injector, a full DPF or a bad sensor. Replacing parts in order of likelihood is an expensive way to find out which.

What diesel diagnostics turns up around here
  • Worn or leaking fuel injectors
  • Fuel pressure problems from a pump, a filter or water in the fuel
  • A boost leak or a sticking turbocharger, usually noticed first while towing
  • A clogged DPF from short trips and idling, or a fault in the DEF system after a cold winter
  • A sticking EGR valve or a leaking EGR cooler
  • A failed sensor, or a wiring fault that makes a good part look bad
How we run diesel diagnostics in Hillsboro
  1. We read every module on the truck, not just the engine, and record stored, pending and history codes.
  2. We watch live data while it runs and, where we can, under load, because many diesel faults only show up pulling weight.
  3. We run the tests the engine computer supports, such as cylinder contribution and injector balance, to find which cylinder is the problem.
  4. We check the fuel, the oil and the boost system directly, not only through the computer.
  5. We test the suspect part before condemning it, then explain what we found and what it costs.
What we scan and test
  • Stored, pending and history codes across every module
  • Live fuel pressure, boost and exhaust temperatures
  • Injector balance and cylinder contribution
  • DPF soot level, DEF system and EGR operation
  • Batteries, wiring and grounds
  • Fuel quality and the water separator
What the repair usually is
  • Replacing the specific part that testing proved had failed
  • Fixing a boost leak, a wiring fault or a corroded connector
  • Injector, turbo or fuel pump replacement
  • DPF regeneration or cleaning, and DEF or EGR repairs
  • Occasionally a simple fix, such as draining water from the fuel

Diesel diagnostics questions we hear every week

Can a parts store code reader diagnose my diesel?

A basic code reader can tell you which system reported a problem, but it usually cannot see the diesel-specific data that finds the cause. It will not show injector balance, DPF soot levels or DEF system tests. That is the difference between a code number and knowing which part to replace. If you already have a code, text it to us and we will tell you what it usually means.

How long does diesel diagnostics take?

A clear, steady fault can often be found the same day. An intermittent problem that only shows up under load, or a fault that involves several systems, can take longer because we need to catch it happening. We will tell you up front what to expect and keep you updated along the way.

How much does diesel diagnostics cost?

The cost depends on how complicated the fault is and how long it takes to find. We tell you the diagnostic cost before we start. Paying for a proper diagnosis almost always costs less than replacing a turbo or a set of injectors that did not need it. Call or text us and describe the problem.
