Car Vibrates at Highway Speed in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A vibration that only shows up at highway speed is usually a wheel or tire problem, most often a tire out of balance, and it is normally a straightforward fix once someone finds which one.

Around town the vehicle drives fine. Then you merge onto US-56 toward McPherson, the needle passes 60, and the steering wheel starts to shimmy or your coffee starts rippling in the cup holder. It is one of the most common things drivers bring us, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix a vibration at highway speed

  1. We start with the simple things, because they are usually the answer. Most highway vibrations come down to tire balance or a damaged tire, so we check those first before looking anywhere more expensive.

  2. If the tires check out, we keep digging. We move on to the suspension, steering and wheel bearings, and when the tires have worn unevenly we check the alignment on our Hunter equipment too, because fresh tires on a bad alignment start shaking again before long.

  3. We tell you what we found and what it costs before we touch anything. Nothing gets done until you say so.

  4. Then we drive it at highway speed again. We make sure the vibration is actually gone, which matters when your weekly drive is to McPherson or Newton and back, not just across town.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive it gently to the shop, but do not ignore it.

A mild vibration from a tire that has lost its balance weight is not an emergency, though it wears your tires and suspension faster the longer it goes on. A vibration that appeared suddenly, is getting worse, or comes with a noise is a different story, because it can mean a damaged tire or loose part. Keep your speed down and book a visit soon.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The shaking started suddenly and is strong enough to make steering hard
  • You see a bulge or bubble on the side of a tire
  • You hear clunking, grinding or a rhythmic thumping along with the vibration
  • You recently had a tire changed and the vibration came on right after, which can mean loose lug nuts

What causes a vibration at highway speed around here
  • A tire that is out of balance, often because a small weight on the wheel fell off on a rough road
  • A tire with a bulge, a flat spot or a separated belt inside it that you cannot always see
  • A bent wheel from a pothole or a hard hit on a curb
  • Tires that have worn unevenly because potholes and gravel knocked the alignment out
  • A worn part in the steering or suspension, such as a tie rod or ball joint, that lets the wheel wobble
  • A failing wheel bearing, the part that lets the wheel spin smoothly
  • Warped brake rotors, if the shaking is mostly when you brake
How we diagnose a vibration at highway speed in Hillsboro
  1. We ask when it started, at what speed it shows up and whether you feel it in the steering wheel or the seat, since that tells us front or rear.
  2. We road-test the vehicle at the speed where you feel it, so we are chasing your vibration and not a different one.
  3. We spin each wheel and tire on a balancer to check balance and look for a bent wheel or a tire that is out of round.
  4. We inspect the tires closely for bulges, flat spots and uneven wear.
  5. We check the steering, suspension and wheel bearings for any looseness.

Questions about a vibration at highway speed

Why does it only shake at one speed?

An out-of-balance tire wobbles a little at every speed, but at one particular speed that wobble lines up with the natural bounce of the suspension and suddenly becomes noticeable. That is why it can feel fine at 45, rough at 65 and smoother again at 75. Tell us the speed when you call or text, because it is a useful clue.

Can I just rotate my tires to fix it?

Rotating the tires can move the vibration from the steering wheel to the seat, but it will not make it go away. The tire or wheel causing it still needs to be balanced, repaired or replaced. We would rather find the actual cause so you are not chasing the shake around the car.

Do I need an alignment if my car vibrates?

An alignment on its own does not usually cure a vibration, since the alignment controls which way the wheels point rather than how smoothly they spin. It does matter when uneven tire wear caused the problem, and in that case we will recommend it along with the fix and explain why.
