Engine Stalling in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

An engine that stalls usually has a problem with fuel, air, spark or the idle control, or a charging fault that lets the electrical system run down.

You find out at the worst moment, rolling up to the four-way stop in Goessel when the engine quietly dies and the steering suddenly goes heavy. Stalling is a safety problem, not just an annoyance, so do not wait for it to happen in traffic. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix an engine that stalls

  1. We take a stall seriously. Losing the engine in traffic is dangerous, so we would rather fetch it than have you drive it here.

  2. We find the cause, even when it is intermittent. Stalling often comes and goes, so we record data and test the parts that fail with heat or cold.

  3. We check the whole chain. Fuel, air, spark and the charging system all get looked at, so we do not fix one and miss another.

  4. You approve the price before we start. When it is done, we drive it cold and hot to make sure it stays running.

Can I keep driving?

Not on busy roads. Let us come and get it if it stalls while moving.

When an engine stalls, you lose power steering and most of the brake assist, which makes the vehicle hard to control. An engine that only stalls occasionally at idle may be okay for a short, quiet trip to the shop. One that cuts out while moving should not be on the highway, so we would rather collect it.

Stop driving and call us if

  • It stalls while you are driving at speed
  • The battery light or several warning lights come on first
  • You smell fuel or burning
  • It will not restart, or restarts and dies again straight away

What makes an engine stall around here
  • A dirty throttle body or idle control, which carbon builds up on over time
  • A clogged fuel filter or a weak fuel pump, especially after a tank of poor fuel
  • A failing crankshaft or camshaft sensor, which tells the computer when to fire
  • A vacuum leak from a cracked hose after a hard winter
  • A failing alternator that lets the battery run flat while you drive
  • Water in the fuel, which is more common in tanks that sit through wet seasons
How we diagnose an engine that stalls in Hillsboro
  1. We ask exactly when it stalls, at stops, when cold, when hot or while moving, because each one points a different way.
  2. We read stored codes and check for sensor faults that come and go.
  3. We test fuel pressure and the charging system, since both can cause a stall with no warning.
  4. We look for air leaks and check the idle control and throttle body.
  5. We try to reproduce the stall on a road test with live data recording.

Engine stalling questions we hear every week

What should I do if my engine stalls while driving?

Stay calm, put the vehicle in neutral, and steer firmly to the shoulder. The steering and brakes will feel heavy, but they still work if you push harder. Once you are stopped safely, try a restart, and call or text us so we can arrange to collect it.

Why does my car stall when I stop but not while driving?

At a stop the engine is running at its slowest, so a dirty idle control, a small air leak or a weak fuel supply shows up there first. Once you are moving, the extra speed covers for it. It still needs fixing, because it tends to get worse.

Could a stall be the battery or the alternator?

Yes, it could, especially if the dash lights dim or the battery light comes on first. A failing alternator lets the battery run down while you drive until there is not enough power to keep the engine running. We test the charging system as part of every stalling diagnosis.
