AC Blowing Warm Air in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

An A/C that blows warm from the moment you switch it on is usually low on refrigerant from a leak, or its compressor is not switching on, and both are fixable.

It picks its moment, too: the first hundred-degree afternoon of July, the truck has been baking in the lot in Hillsboro, you turn the dial to max, and the vents breathe out the same hot air that is coming off the pavement. That is different from an A/C that starts cold and fades, or one that only cools on the highway, and the difference points us at the fault. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix an A/C that blows warm

  1. We find out why it is warm before we add anything. A system that is low has a leak, and a system that is full but warm has a different problem, so filling it first would only hide the clue.

  2. We fix the leak, not just the symptom. Once the leak is repaired, we pull the system into a vacuum to clear out air and moisture, then charge it by weight to the maker's figure.

  3. We check the cheap electrical parts first. A fuse or a relay costs very little, and we would much rather find that than sell you a compressor you did not need.

  4. You approve every repair before we start, and we tell you which items can wait until fall and which ones will not. Drivers bring us warm A/C from across Marion, Harvey, McPherson, Chase and Lyon Counties every summer.

Can I keep driving?

Yes, the vehicle is fine to drive, but take the heat seriously for the people in it.

An A/C that blows warm does not usually hurt the engine, so you can keep driving while you book a visit. A Kansas summer afternoon in a closed car is a real risk, though, for babies, older passengers and dogs, so crack the windows and plan short trips until it is fixed. If the compressor starts grinding or squealing, switch the A/C off, because on many vehicles the same belt also runs the charging system and sometimes the water pump.

Stop driving and call us if

  • You hear grinding, screeching or a loud rattle from the engine when the A/C is on
  • The temperature gauge climbs toward hot
  • You smell burning or see smoke from the vents or under the hood
  • Someone in the vehicle feels faint, sick or confused in the heat

What makes an A/C blow warm around here
  • A slow refrigerant leak at an O-ring, a hose or a fitting, which dries out and shrinks over a hot summer and a cold winter
  • A condenser punctured by a stone thrown up on a gravel county road
  • A compressor clutch, relay or fuse that has stopped switching the compressor on
  • A pressure switch that keeps the compressor off because the charge is too low to run safely
  • A blend door stuck on heat, so warm air mixes in no matter what the dial says
  • A worn compressor that turns but no longer pumps
How we diagnose an ac blowing warm air in Hillsboro
  1. We ask whether it faded slowly or quit all at once, because a slow fade points at a leak and a sudden stop points at an electrical part.
  2. We check that the compressor is actually switching on, and test the fuse, relay and pressure switch if it is not.
  3. We connect gauges to both sides of the system, so we know whether it is low, overfull or not pumping.
  4. We find the leak with dye and a UV lamp or an electronic detector, rather than guessing at the most likely fitting.
  5. We check the blend door moves all the way to cold, in case the A/C is fine and the heat is leaking in.

Questions about an A/C blowing warm air

Is it just low on Freon?

It might be, but low refrigerant is a result rather than a cause, because a sealed system does not use it up. If it is low, it leaked, and filling it without finding the leak means you will be back when the heat returns. We check the charge and find where it went.

My A/C was cold yesterday and warm today. What happened?

A sudden change usually points at something switching off rather than slowly leaking out. A blown fuse, a failed relay or a compressor clutch that no longer engages are all common. Text us what you noticed, including any click or noise, and we will tell you what to check.

Will fixing my A/C mean a new compressor?

Usually it will not. Most warm A/C complaints turn out to be a leak, a relay or a stuck door, and a compressor is further down the list. If yours has truly failed, we show you how we know before we quote it.
