Rough Idle in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A rough idle is an engine that shakes, stumbles or surges while you are stopped, and it is usually a spark, air or fuel problem that shows up at idle first.

You notice it waiting at the stop sign on Main Street, coffee in the cupholder, when the cup starts trembling and the engine note wobbles up and down. Then the light turns green and it drives almost fine. Catching it at this stage is the cheap end of the problem, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we fix a rough idle

  1. We find the cause before we sell a part. A rough idle can be a hose, a coil or a dirty sensor, and the fix for each is very different.

  2. We start with the likely and inexpensive. Many rough idles come down to one cracked hose or one tired coil, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a pile of parts.

  3. We fix it properly and then let it idle. After the repair we watch it idle cold and warm to make sure the stumble is gone for good.

  4. You hear it in plain words first. We explain what we found and what it costs, and nothing gets done until you approve it.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips, carefully, for now.

A slightly rough idle on a car that drives normally will not usually leave you stranded this week. It is a sign that something is wearing out, though, and it tends to get worse. If it starts stalling at stops, where you would lose power steering and brake assist, keep it off busy roads and get it in quickly.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The check engine light starts flashing
  • The engine stalls at stops or in traffic
  • You smell raw fuel or see smoke
  • The temperature gauge climbs above normal

What makes an engine idle rough around here
  • Worn spark plugs or a weak ignition coil, which show up first at idle
  • A cracked vacuum hose, which is common after a few hard Kansas winters
  • A dirty throttle body or idle control, where carbon builds up over time
  • A dirty airflow sensor after dusty gravel roads and harvest chaff get past the air filter
  • Clogged fuel injectors that no longer spray evenly
  • Worn engine mounts, which let a normal idle shake the whole cab
How we diagnose a rough idle in Hillsboro
  1. We listen to it idle cold and warm, with the air conditioning on and off, because when it happens narrows the search.
  2. We read any stored codes and watch live data for misfire counts and fuel trims, which show whether it is getting too much air or too little fuel.
  3. We smoke-test the intake to find vacuum leaks too small to hear.
  4. We check the plugs, coils and injectors cylinder by cylinder.
  5. We check the engine mounts, since a worn mount can make a normal idle feel rough.

Rough idle questions we hear every week

What is the difference between a rough idle and a misfire?

A rough idle is the symptom you feel, and a misfire is one of the most common causes of it. A misfire means a cylinder is not firing properly, and it is often most noticeable at idle. A rough idle can also come from an air leak or a dirty sensor with no misfire at all, which is why we test rather than assume.

Why does my car idle rough but drive fine?

At idle the engine is barely working, so small problems have nowhere to hide. Once you are moving, the engine runs faster and can mask a weak coil or a small air leak. It still needs fixing, because it usually gets worse and starts showing up on the road too.

Can a rough idle damage my engine?

A mild rough idle usually is not doing damage on its own, but what causes it can. A misfire that gets worse can overheat the catalytic converter, and an engine that stalls in traffic is a safety problem. Getting it checked early keeps it a small repair.
