Hard Shifting in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Hard shifting, where gear changes feel harsh, late or like a shove, is often low or worn fluid, a sensor or software rather than a failing transmission.

You feel it pulling away from a stop sign in town: a clunk into second that jolts your coffee, when last month you barely noticed the shifts at all. It is worth catching early, before a small problem becomes a big one, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

We answer texts the same day we get them.

How we fix hard shifting at Moxie

  1. We start with the simple causes. Fluid, sensors, software and mounts come first, because they are common and cost far less than anything inside the transmission.

  2. We read the transmission computer, not just the engine. Many shifting faults only show up there, and a basic code reader never sees them.

  3. We fix it and prove it. After the repair we road-test it through every gear, cold and warm where we can.

  4. If the trouble is inside, we tell you plainly. You get the options and the price before any work starts, and nothing is done until you say so.

Why Hillsboro brings hard shifting to Moxie

  • We read the transmission computer

Our dealer-level diagnostics look past the engine computer, so small fixes are not mistaken for big ones.

  • One-year warranty

Engine and transmission work carries Moxie's one-year warranty, and we go through exactly what it covers before you approve the repair.

  • An ASE-certified technician

Our technician is ASE certified in engine repair, automatic transmissions and drivetrains, and Moxie pays for ASE testing for the whole team.

  • You approve the work first

We explain what we found and what it costs, and nothing is done until you decide.

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.

Can I keep driving?

Usually yes, gently, while you book it in.

A hard shift on its own is not usually an emergency, and many of the causes are small. It is still worth checking soon, because harsh shifts wear parts faster and can be the early sign of something bigger. If it starts slipping, will not shift, or you smell something hot, stop driving it and call us.

Stop driving and call us if

  • It slips, or the engine revs without the vehicle speeding up
  • It gets stuck in one gear
  • You smell something hot or burning
  • A transmission warning light comes on

What causes hard shifting around here
  • Low fluid from a slow leak
  • Old fluid that has worn out after towing and hot Kansas summers
  • A faulty speed sensor or shift solenoid
  • Software that needs an update or a relearn, especially after a battery change
  • Worn engine or transmission mounts
  • On a manual, a worn clutch or low clutch fluid
How we diagnose hard shifting in Hillsboro
  1. We check the fluid level and condition first.
  2. We read the transmission computer for codes and check whether its software needs updating.
  3. We road-test it and watch live data as it shifts, to see which gear change is the problem.
  4. We check the engine and transmission mounts for wear.
  5. Then we explain what we found and what it will cost before anything is done.

Hard shifting questions we hear every week

Can a software update really fix hard shifting?

It can on many newer vehicles. The transmission computer decides when and how firmly to shift, and makers sometimes release updates that change how it behaves. We check for updates and relearn the shifts before looking at anything more expensive.

Why does it shift hard since I changed the battery?

Many transmissions learn how you drive and adjust their shifts, and a battery change can wipe that memory. It often settles down after some normal driving, and some vehicles need a relearn done with a scan tool. If it has not improved after a week or so, text us.

Is a harder shift on cold mornings normal?

A slightly firmer shift on a frosty morning can be normal, since the fluid is thicker until it warms up. A harsh bang every cold morning is not, and old fluid is a common reason. We can check the fluid and tell you whether a service will help.
