Oil Leak in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
Dark brown or black spots where you park almost always mean engine oil is getting past a gasket or seal, and most leaks are slow and fixable before they cause damage.
You back out of the garage on a cold morning and there it is on the concrete, a spot a little bigger than last week's. The trick is that oil runs downhill and spreads, so the drip is rarely right under the part that is leaking. We find the real source, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we track down an oil leak
We find the real source, not just the drip. Oil runs a long way before it falls, and fixing the wrong gasket is money wasted.
We start with the easy checks. A loose drain plug or filter is quick to fix, and we will say so if that is all it is.
We tell you how urgent it is. Some leaks can wait until your next oil change, and some should not wait, and we will say which is which.
You approve the price before we start. Afterward we check it again to make sure it stays dry.

Can I keep driving?
Usually yes, as long as you keep the oil level topped up.
A slow drip is rarely an emergency, but it needs watching. Check the dipstick often and top up when it is low, because running low on oil is what damages engines. A fast leak, a burning smell or smoke from under the hood is different, so stop driving and call us.
Stop driving and call us if
- The oil light comes on
- You see smoke from under the hood or smell strong burning oil
- The spot has turned into a puddle overnight
- Oil is spraying or dripping steadily while the engine runs

What makes an engine leak oil around here
- Hardened gaskets and seals on higher-mileage engines, which shrink after years of heat and cold
- A valve cover gasket, one of the most common leaks and often a simple repair
- A loose drain plug or oil filter after a recent oil change
- An oil pan damaged or loosened by gravel roads and washboard driving
- A worn front or rear main seal where the crankshaft leaves the engine
- Pressure build-up from a clogged breather valve pushing oil past seals
How we diagnose an oil leak in Hillsboro
- We ask when you noticed it and how big the spot is, because that tells us how fast it is leaking.
- We lift the vehicle and clean the area, so we are looking at fresh oil, not old grime.
- If the source is hard to see, we add a dye to the oil and find it with a UV light.
- We check the breather system, since built-up pressure can push oil past good seals.
- We show you the leak and give you a price before any work starts.

Oil leak questions we hear every week
How serious is an oil leak?
Most oil leaks are slow and not an emergency, but they do get worse over time. The real danger is running low on oil, or oil dripping onto a hot exhaust and smoking. Keep an eye on the dipstick and get it checked soon.
What if the oil level drops but I cannot find a leak?
Then the engine may be burning oil rather than leaking it. That usually shows up as blue smoke from the tailpipe or oily spark plugs. Our burning oil page explains that side of it, and we can test for both.
Can I just keep adding oil?
You can for a short while, as long as you check often and never let it run low. It is not a long-term fix, though, because leaks grow and can soak nearby parts like belts and hoses. Fixing it early is usually cheaper.
