Tire Repair in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Most flat tires and slow leaks can be repaired if the hole is small and sits in the tread, which is the part of the tire that touches the road.

A puncture in the sidewall or the rounded edge, or a tire that was driven on while flat, usually has to be replaced instead. Maybe you have been topping up the same tire at the gas station every other morning, or you found a shiny screw head in it after a week of gravel roads and job sites. Either way, bring it in, or we will come and get it, and we will tell you which kind of problem you have.

What a tire repair at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We repair tires from the inside, the way tire makers recommend. A plug pushed in from the outside is a roadside quick fix, and it can work loose or let water into the steel belts inside the tire. We take the tire off the wheel, inspect the inside, and seal the hole with a plug and patch together, so it is sealed through the whole thickness of the tire.

  2. We follow the limits, even when they are not the answer you hoped for. Tire industry guidelines generally allow repairs only in the tread and only for small punctures, usually about a quarter of an inch across or less. The sidewall and the shoulder, which is the curved edge of the tire, flex too much for a patch to hold safely.

  3. We show you, rather than just telling you. If your tire falls outside those limits, we will point to the damage so you can see why it cannot be saved.

  4. We send you home with the whole set right. The repaired tire is balanced when it goes back on, and we set the pressure on all four, not only the one that was flat.

What punctures tires around here
  • Nails, screws and sharp stones picked up on gravel roads, job sites and farm lanes
  • A leak where the tire seals against the wheel, often from corrosion on older wheels after a salty winter
  • A worn or cracked valve stem, the small rubber tube you fill the tire through
  • A bent wheel from a pothole, which can break the seal between the tire and the wheel
  • A damaged tire pressure sensor or sensor seal
How we find a tire leak
  1. We ask how fast the tire loses air, because a slow leak over a week points somewhere different than one that goes flat overnight.
  2. We inflate the tire and spray it with soapy water, which bubbles right where the air escapes.
  3. We check the valve stem, the sensor and the edge where the tire meets the wheel, not only the tread.
  4. We take the tire off the wheel and look at the inside, because damage from driving on a flat tire often cannot be seen from the outside.
What we check on a leaking tire
  • The whole tread and both sidewalls for other damage
  • The inside of the tire for wear or tearing from being driven on while low
  • The valve stem and the tire pressure sensor
  • The wheel's sealing edge for rust or bends
  • Tread depth, so you are not paying to repair a tire that is nearly worn out
What the fix usually is
  • A combination plug and patch fitted from the inside, which is the proper repair for a puncture in the tread
  • A new valve stem or sensor seal
  • Cleaning and resealing the edge of the wheel where it meets the tire
  • A new tire, when the damage is in the sidewall or the tire was ruined by running flat

Tire repair questions we hear every week

Can a tire with a nail in it be repaired?

It usually can, as long as the nail is in the tread and the hole is small. If the nail went in near the edge of the tire or through the sidewall, it generally cannot be repaired safely. Leave the nail in until you get here, because pulling it out can turn a slow leak into a flat tire on the spot. Text us a photo and we will tell you what we see.

Is it safe to drive on a tire with a slow leak?

It is safe for a short drive to a shop if you fill the tire to the right pressure first. Driving on a tire that is well under pressure overheats it and damages the inside, which can turn a simple repair into a new tire. If it will not hold air long enough to get here, call us and we will talk it through or come and get it.

How long does a tire repair take?

A straightforward puncture repair usually takes well under an hour once the vehicle is in the bay, because the tire has to come off the wheel and be balanced again. If we find a problem with the valve stem, the sensor or the wheel, we will call you before doing anything extra, so there are no surprises on the bill.
