Axles & CV Joints in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A clicking or popping noise when you turn sharply, like pulling into a parking space, is the classic sign of a worn CV joint.
CV joints, short for constant velocity joints, sit at each end of the axle shafts that turn the front wheels on most cars and many SUVs, and they let the wheels steer and bounce while still being driven. Each one is packed with grease and sealed by a rubber boot. You usually hear it first swinging into the lot at the grocery store in Hillsboro, click, click, click, and it gets a little louder every week. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

We catch torn boots early. Spotting a split boot during an oil change or inspection can save you from a clicking axle a few months later, and we will point it out when we see one.
We tell you plainly when a whole axle is the better buy. Once a joint is noisy, the grease inside is contaminated and the joint is worn, so a complete replacement axle is usually the most reliable and cost-effective repair, and we quote it before starting.
We check the neighbors while everything is apart. A worn wheel bearing or ball joint on the same corner is far easier to fix now than on a second visit.

What wears out CV joints around here
- A torn CV boot, which lets the grease out and road grit in
- Rubber boots that have dried and cracked from Kansas summer heat and winter cold
- Gravel, ruts and potholes, which knock boots and joints about
- A lift or lowering kit that makes the joints work at extreme angles
- Worn axle seals on rear-wheel-drive trucks, which leak differential oil onto the brakes
How we diagnose axle and CV joint problems in Hillsboro
- We drive in tight circles both ways, which makes a worn outer CV joint click on cue.
- We put the vehicle in the air and inspect every boot for tears, cracks and thrown grease.
- We check each axle for play at the joints and at the wheel end.
- We feel for vibration under acceleration, which points to a worn inner joint.
- We rule out a wheel bearing, which can hum in a similar way and is often confused with an axle.
What we check
- Inner and outer CV boots on both sides
- Play in each CV joint and the axle shaft
- Axle seals at the transmission or differential
- Wheel bearings and hubs at the same corner
- Rear axle shafts and seals on trucks and rear-wheel-drive vehicles
- Suspension parts around the axle, such as ball joints and control arms
What the repair usually turns out to be
- Replacing the complete axle shaft, which is the usual repair on most modern vehicles
- Replacing just the boot, if a tear is caught before the joint is damaged
- Replacing leaking axle seals
- Replacing a rear axle shaft or bearing on a truck
- Wheel bearing replacement if that turns out to be the real noise

Axle and CV joint questions we hear every week
How long can I drive with a clicking CV joint?
A clicking CV joint often keeps going for a while, but nobody can honestly tell you how long, and it only gets worse. If it fails completely, that wheel stops being driven and the vehicle will not move, usually at an awkward moment. Book it in soon rather than waiting for it to decide for you.
Can you just replace the CV boot?
Sometimes we can, if the tear is caught early and the joint is not noisy yet. Once it clicks, dirt has already worn the joint, and a new boot on a worn joint will not stop the noise. In that case a complete axle is usually the better value. Text us a photo of the boot and we will tell you which situation you are in.
How much does it cost to replace a CV axle?
It depends on your vehicle and on whether one or both sides are worn. Front axles on most cars are a common, fairly quick repair, while some four-wheel-drive trucks take more work. Call or text (620) 416-0008 with your year and model, and we will give you the price before any work starts.
