Batteries, Starters & Alternators in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

When your vehicle will not start, the battery, the starter or the alternator is usually to blame.

We test all three, because a failure in any one of them looks exactly the same from the driver's seat. Picture a January morning in Hillsboro, frost on the windshield, and the engine gives you one slow groan and a click. Put a new battery in a vehicle whose alternator stopped charging, and you have bought a battery that will be flat again by Friday. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What battery, starter and alternator repair looks like at Moxie

  1. We find out which of the three it is before we replace anything. It sounds obvious, but this is the single most common repair people end up paying for twice.

  2. We register the new battery when your vehicle needs it. On a lot of newer vehicles a replacement battery has to be coded to the charging system, or the vehicle keeps charging it like the old one and shortens its life considerably. We do that as part of the job.

  3. We tell you when it is only a loose terminal. If a clean and tighten is the whole fix, we will say so and charge you accordingly, rather than finding something pricier to sell you.

Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with its batteries, starters and alternators

  • We test all three

Battery, starter and charging, every time, because the one that failed is not always the one making the noise.

  • We pick your vehicle up

A vehicle that will not start is the definition of a vehicle you cannot bring to us. We will come to it.

  • Batteries registered where required

On many newer vehicles a battery has to be coded to the charging system or it will not last. We do that.

  • Warranty in writing

Starter, alternator, charging and electrical repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and new batteries carry their manufacturer's warranty.

What kills batteries, starters and alternators around here
  • A battery at the end of its life, which is usually four to six years around here
  • Kansas summer heat, which wears a battery out long before winter shows you
  • Corroded or loose terminals, which can imitate a dead battery exactly
  • An alternator no longer charging, so the battery is running the whole vehicle alone
  • A failing starter motor or solenoid
  • A parasitic drain pulling current while the vehicle is parked
  • A bad ground strap, which is cheap and causes symptoms far out of proportion
How we test the battery, starter and alternator in Hillsboro
  1. We load test the battery rather than just reading its voltage. A battery can show 12 volts and still be unable to turn a starter, and that is the case that fools people.
  2. We measure what the alternator is actually putting out, at idle and with the lights and blower running, because plenty of alternators pass at idle and fail under load.
  3. We check voltage drop across the cables and grounds, which is how a good battery and a good starter can still add up to a no-start.
  4. We measure the current the starter draws. A starter pulling too much is on its way out even if it still turns today.
  5. If the vehicle goes flat while parked, we test for a parasitic drain and trace which circuit is doing it.
What we check before we sell you anything
  • Battery condition, state of charge and load test result
  • Terminals, cable ends and ground straps
  • Alternator output under load, and the drive belt turning it
  • Starter current draw and solenoid operation
  • Parasitic draw with the vehicle asleep
What the repair usually turns out to be
  • A new battery, correctly sized and registered to the vehicle where that is required
  • Cleaning or replacing corroded terminals and ground straps, which is sometimes the whole job
  • Alternator replacement
  • Starter replacement
  • Tracing and repairing a circuit that is draining the battery overnight

Battery, starter and alternator questions we hear every week

How long should a battery last?

Four to six years is typical, and Kansas summers shorten that more than Kansas winters do. Heat is what kills batteries, and cold is simply when you find out. A battery that struggled in August is one to test before the first freeze rather than after it, and we are happy to test it whenever you are in.

It started after a jump, so the battery is fine, isn't it?

Not necessarily, and that is exactly the trap. A jump proves the starter works and the engine runs. It tells you nothing about whether the battery can hold a charge, or whether the alternator is putting one back in. Get it tested either way, because otherwise you get stranded somewhere less convenient next time.

Can you test it without me leaving the vehicle all day?

Battery, starter and charging can all be tested in well under an hour, and most of the time you will have an answer while you wait. A parasitic drain is the exception, because the vehicle has to sit and go to sleep properly before the reading means anything. Text us at (620) 416-0008 and we will find you a time.
