Transmission Will Not Shift in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A transmission that will not shift is usually stuck in one gear to protect itself, or the shifter is stuck in park, and neither always means a big repair.

Maybe the truck crawled home from the field in one gear with the engine working hard, or the car sat in a parking lot in Hillsboro and the shifter simply would not budge. Do not push it further than you have to. Call us, and we will come and get it.

How we fix a transmission that will not shift

  1. We start with the reason it stopped. The transmission computer usually stores a code when it goes into limp mode, and that code points to where we look first.

  2. We check the simple parts before the transmission itself. A switch, a cable, a sensor or a chewed wire can all stop a healthy transmission from shifting.

  3. We fix it and prove it. Every repair ends with a road test through every gear.

  4. If the failure is inside, we lay out repair, rebuilt and replacement options with the price for each, and financing is available if it helps.

Sounds like yours? Tell us what it is doing and we will tell you straight.

Can I keep driving?

Only as far as a safe place. Then call us.

Limp mode is designed to get you off the road, not to be driven on. It usually holds one gear, so the engine works hard and the transmission can overheat at speed. Drive gently to a safe spot, or straight to us if we are close, and let us come and get it from there. If it will not go into gear at all, do not force the shifter.

Stop driving and call us if

  • It will not move in drive or reverse
  • You smell something hot or see smoke
  • It is stuck in a low gear on the highway
  • Fluid is pouring or dripping under the vehicle

Paying for it

This is one of the repairs people put off because of what it costs, and putting it off usually makes it worse. You can split it into payments and get the vehicle back on the road now, with Affirm, Sunbit, Synchrony Car Care, NAPA EasyPay and more, including options for credit that is still being built.

Questions about a transmission that will not shift

What is limp mode?

Limp mode is a protective setting where the transmission computer holds one gear after it senses a problem. It lets you get off the road without doing more damage, but it is not meant for normal driving. The code it stored tells us where to start.

Why will my car not come out of park?

The most common reason is that the shift lock is not getting the signal that your foot is on the brake, often because of a failed brake light switch. A worn shift cable can do it too. Check whether your brake lights work, and text us what you find.

It shifts fine again after a restart. Am I okay?

It may shift normally for a while, but the problem that set it off is still there and usually comes back. Book it in while it is working, because it is easier to diagnose before it fails completely.
