Transmission Service in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
Transmission service means replacing the old fluid inside your transmission, and on many vehicles the filter too, and it costs a small fraction of what a transmission repair does.
That fluid lubricates, it cools, and in an automatic it is what actually makes the gears change. Heat is what wears it out, and nothing makes heat like pulling a camper down I-135 on a hundred-degree July afternoon or hauling a loaded trailer through harvest. Worn-out fluid is one of the most common reasons a transmission fails early, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesWhat a transmission service at Moxie actually looks like
We service it the way the manufacturer intended. That means the correct fluid for your specific vehicle, the right amount, and a new filter where there is one. Modern transmissions are fussy about fluid, and a one-size-fits-all bottle can cause the very shifting problems a service is meant to prevent.
We look before we pour. If the fluid tells us something is already wrong inside, we will say so plainly rather than sell you a service that will not fix it.
We road-test it afterward. We make sure it shifts the way it should, and we tell you when the next service will be due based on how you actually drive.

What wears out transmission fluid around here
- Heat, which is the main thing that wears transmission fluid out
- Towing and heavy loads, especially at harvest, which make the transmission run hotter
- Stop-and-go town driving and long summer drives in Kansas heat
- Tiny bits of wear material from the clutches inside, which collect in the fluid
- Simple age, since fluid breaks down over the years even on a low-mileage vehicle
How we check your transmission before servicing it
- We check the fluid level and look at its color and smell first, because that tells us how the transmission has been treated.
- We ask how you use the vehicle, since towing and hauling change what the right service interval is.
- We look up the manufacturer's specified fluid and procedure for your exact vehicle, because the wrong fluid can cause shifting problems of its own.
- We scan for stored transmission codes, so a service is not covering up a problem that needs a repair instead.
What we check during a transmission service
- Fluid level, color and smell
- The transmission pan and what has settled in it, where the design allows us to drop it
- The filter, on vehicles that have a serviceable one
- Seals, gaskets and cooler lines for leaks
- Stored codes from the transmission computer
- Shift quality on a short road test afterward
What the service usually includes
- A drain and refill with the fluid your manufacturer specifies
- A pan drop with a new filter and gasket, on vehicles designed for it
- Fixing a small leak we found while we were in there
- A transmission diagnosis instead, if the fluid shows signs of a deeper problem

Transmission service questions we hear every week
How often should transmission fluid be changed?
It varies a great deal by vehicle. Many manufacturers suggest somewhere between 30,000 and 100,000 miles, with a shorter interval if you tow or drive in heavy conditions, and your owner's manual has the exact number. Some vehicles are sold with lifetime fluid, but heat still wears it out. Text us your year and model and we will look it up.
Can changing old transmission fluid cause problems?
It is a fair worry and a common one. On a transmission that is already badly worn, fresh fluid will not fix it, and sometimes it reveals problems the old fluid was masking. That is why we check the fluid and scan for codes first, and tell you honestly if a service is unlikely to help before you spend money on it.
How much does a transmission service cost?
The price depends mostly on your vehicle, including how much fluid it holds, which fluid the manufacturer requires, and whether it has a filter to replace. Some specialty fluids cost several times more than others. Call or text (620) 416-0008 with your year, make and model, and we will give you a real number before any work starts.
