Defroster Not Working in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A front defroster that will not clear the glass usually has a fan, heat or A/C fault, while a dead rear one usually has a broken line or a lost connection in the glass.
Either way, it is a safety problem in winter. Think of a dark December morning after freezing drizzle, the windshield fogging from the inside as fast as you wipe it, and a school bus somewhere up ahead on K-15. A defroster is safety equipment in a Kansas winter, not a comfort extra, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix a defroster that is not working
We treat it as a safety repair. A windshield you cannot see through is not something to put off until spring, so we aim to get you in quickly when you tell us it is the defroster.
We fix the front system at its source. That might be the fan, the heat, the A/C or a stuck door, and each one gets tested before we quote.
We check the rear window before anyone talks about glass. A fuse, relay or loose tab is often the real problem, and we tell you honestly if the glass itself is the issue.
Glass and heating work happen under one roof. If the rear glass does need replacing, we handle that here too, and you approve every repair before we start, whether you drive in from Marion, Harvey, McPherson, Chase or Lyon County.

Can I keep driving?
Not until you can see clearly out of every window.
A defroster that is not working is a visibility problem, and visibility is safety. On a dry, clear day you can drive it to us. When the glass is frosted or fogging, do not set off peering through a small clear patch. Scrape every window fully, run the fan on fresh air with the A/C on, and crack a window if you need to. If you still cannot keep the windshield clear, leave the vehicle parked and we will come and get it.
Stop driving and call us if
- You cannot keep the windshield clear enough to see the road
- The glass fogs with a greasy film and there is a strong sweet smell inside
- You smell burning plastic or hot wiring when the defroster is on
- The temperature gauge climbs while the heat goes cold

What stops a defroster working around here
- A blower fan, resistor or fuse that has failed, so no air reaches the windshield
- Low coolant or a thermostat stuck open, so the air never gets hot
- An A/C system that is not running, so the air is warm but still damp
- A door motor behind the dash stuck on floor or dash vents instead of defrost
- A leaking heater core, which fogs the glass with coolant vapor
- Rear window grid lines scratched by cargo, ice scrapers and hay bales in the back of an SUV
- A connection tab that has come off the rear glass, or a failed relay or fuse
How we diagnose a defroster that is not working in Hillsboro
- We ask whether the problem is the front, the rear or both, because they are completely separate systems.
- On the front, we check airflow to the windshield, how hot the air gets and whether the A/C is running to dry it.
- We check the coolant and the inside of the glass for the greasy film of a heater core leak.
- On the rear, we test the power at each tab and trace the grid lines to find exactly where one is broken.
- We test the fuse, relay and switch for the rear window and heated mirrors.

Questions about a defroster that is not working
Why does my windshield fog up more with the heat on?
Warm air holds more moisture, and if the A/C is not drying it, that moisture lands on the cold glass as fog. Most vehicles run the A/C automatically on the defrost setting for this reason. If yours is not cooling, the defroster struggles, so it is worth having both checked together.
Can a rear defroster line be repaired?
A broken line or a loose tab is sometimes repairable, depending on the damage and the glass. We find exactly where the break is first and tell you what your options are. Be gentle with ice scrapers on the rear window, and keep cargo from sliding against it.
Should I use recirculate or fresh air to defrost?
Fresh air works better than recirculate. Recirculated air carries the moisture from everyone's breath and wet boots, which is exactly what fogs the glass. Fresh air with the heat and the A/C on clears the windshield fastest.
