Dashboard Warning Lights in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A warning light's color is your first clue: red means stop soon and safely, amber or yellow means get it checked soon, and green or blue is just information.

You are on K-15 south of town with a trailer behind you when a new symbol appears, and you are left wondering whether to keep going or pull onto the shoulder. This page covers the common lights nearly every vehicle shares, and your owner's manual lists the rest. If you are ever unsure, text us a photo of the dash, then bring it in, or we will come and get it.

How we deal with a warning light at Moxie

  1. We tell you how urgent it really is. Some lights mean park it today, and some mean book it for next week, and we will be straight with you about which one you have.

  2. We read every system, not just the engine. Airbag, ABS, transmission and body modules all store their own codes, and we check them all.

  3. We treat the code as a clue, not an answer. It tells us where to look, and we test the part before we replace anything.

  4. You approve the repair first. We tell you what we found, what it costs and what can wait.

Why Hillsboro brings dashboard warning lights to Moxie

  • Dealer-level diagnostics

We read the codes from every system in the vehicle, not just the engine.

  • An ASE-certified technician

Our technician is ASE certified in engine repair, automatic transmissions and drivetrains, and Moxie pays for ASE testing for the whole team.

  • Warranty in writing

Most repairs carry the NAPA 24/24 nationwide warranty for 24 months or 24,000 miles, and engine and transmission work carries Moxie's own one-year warranty. We tell you which one covers your repair before any work starts.

  • We come and get it

Can I keep driving?

It depends on the light, so use its color as your guide.

A red light, or a flashing check engine light, means stop as soon as it is safe and call us rather than driving on. An amber light usually means it is safe to drive gently for now, but book it in soon, because an amber light left alone can become a red one. A green or blue light is just information, like your high beams or cruise control being on.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The oil pressure light comes on while driving
  • The temperature light is on or the gauge is in the red
  • The check engine light is flashing
  • The red brake light stays on with the parking brake off, or the pedal feels soft
  • You see steam or smoke, or smell burning

Why warning lights come on around here
  • Loose gas caps, which can turn on the check engine light after a fill-up
  • Cold snaps dropping tire pressure overnight, which triggers the tire pressure light
  • Dust, mud and water getting into sensors on gravel and farm roads
  • Low oil or coolant on vehicles that are overdue for a check
  • Worn brake pads, which lower the fluid level and can light the brake warning
  • Failing alternators or belts, which turn on the battery light
How we diagnose a dashboard warning light in Hillsboro
  1. We ask which light, what color, and whether it is steady or flashing.
  2. We connect to the vehicle's computer and read the codes from every system, not just the engine.
  3. We check the basics like oil, coolant, brake fluid and tire pressure.
  4. We test the part the code points to, rather than replacing it on the code alone.
  5. We explain what the light means, what it needs, and how urgent it really is.

Questions about dashboard warning lights

Which dashboard lights mean I should stop driving?

Stop as soon as it is safe for the red oil pressure light, the red temperature light, a red brake light with the parking brake off, and a flashing check engine light. The red battery light means get somewhere safe soon. When in doubt, pull over and text us a photo of the dash.

Why is my tire pressure light on after a cold night?

Cold air shrinks, so tire pressure drops overnight and can trip the light. Check all four tires with a gauge and fill them to the numbers on the sticker inside the driver's door. If it comes back on, one tire may have a slow leak.

My diesel has lights I do not recognize. What do they mean?

Diesels add a few of their own, like a glow plug coil light and lights for the exhaust filter and diesel exhaust fluid. Your owner's manual will show each one, and our diesel pages explain the most common. Text us a photo if you are not sure.
