ABS Light Is On in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
An amber ABS light means the anti-lock system has found a fault and switched itself off, so your normal brakes still work but the safety net is gone.
It tends to appear after a muddy week on the county roads north of Hillsboro, or on the first icy January morning, which is exactly when you would want anti-lock brakes keeping the wheels from locking. The cause is often small, like a dirty or damaged wheel sensor. Bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we fix an ABS light at Moxie
We find the reason, not just the code. A code points at a wheel or a circuit, and we test the sensor, wiring and connector there before replacing anything.
We start with the simple fixes. Sometimes a sensor only needs cleaning or a connector needs repairing, and we will not sell you a part you do not need.
We confirm it on the road. After the repair, we drive it and watch every wheel sensor read cleanly, so the light stays off for the right reason.
You approve everything first. We tell you what we found and what it costs before any work starts.

Can I keep driving?
Yes, gently, and leave more room to stop.
With only the amber ABS light on, your ordinary brakes still work, so you can usually drive it to us. The wheels can lock and skid in a hard stop, though, especially on gravel, ice or wet roads. Drive a little slower, leave extra space and book it in soon.
Stop driving and call us if
- The red brake warning light is on as well

What turns the ABS light on around here
- A wheel speed sensor caked in mud, grit or road salt from gravel roads
- Sensor wiring damaged by ice, flying gravel or rodents
- A cracked or rusted sensor ring on the axle or hub
- Low brake fluid, which some vehicles flag with the ABS light
- A blown fuse or a corroded connector
- A failing ABS pump or control module, which is less common
How we diagnose an ABS light that is on in Hillsboro
- We ask when the light came on and what the car had just been through, because mud, frost and potholes all leave clues.
- We read the stored fault codes with dealer-level diagnostic equipment, which tells us which wheel or circuit to look at.
- We watch each wheel sensor's live reading on a test drive to find the one that drops out.
- We inspect the sensor, its wiring and the ring it reads for dirt, damage and rust.
- We check the brake fluid level and the fuses before we name any part.

ABS light questions we hear every week
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
It is usually safe to drive carefully if only the amber ABS light is on and the pedal feels normal. Your regular brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a hard stop. If the red brake light is on too, or the pedal feels different, stop driving and call us.
Can you just turn the light off?
We can clear it, but it will come back if the fault is still there, and until then you are driving without anti-lock brakes and without knowing it. We would rather find the cause and fix it, so the light means something again.
Why did the traction control light come on too?
Traction control uses the same wheel sensors as the anti-lock brakes. When one sensor stops reading, both systems switch off together, so the two lights usually point at the same fault.
