Engine Knocking in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A deep, heavy knock that speeds up with the engine usually means worn internal parts or low oil, and it is one of the few noises where you should stop driving soon.
A lighter pinging or rattling when you accelerate uphill is different, and it often comes from fuel or ignition timing. You might first hear it pulling away from the elevator with a full bed, a dull thud-thud from low in the engine that was not there last week. Please do not wait on this one. Bring it in, or better still, we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we find out what is knocking
We find out what kind of knock it is. A loose heat shield, fuel pinging and a worn bearing can all sound like a knock, and they are very different repairs.
We check the oil first. Low oil pressure is the most urgent possibility, and a gauge tells us quickly whether the engine is at risk.
We give you honest options. If the engine is worn inside, we explain repair and replacement in plain words, with prices, and you choose.
Financing is available on larger engine repairs. A worn engine should not have to wait for payday, so ask us about spreading the cost.

Can I keep driving?
Not if it is a deep, heavy knock. Stop and call us.
A deep knock from inside the engine can go from bad to ruined with very little warning, and a failed bearing can break the engine completely. Light pinging under load is less urgent, so ease off the throttle, avoid towing, and get it checked soon. If you are not sure which you are hearing, treat it as the serious one and let us come and get it.
Stop driving and call us if
- The oil pressure light is on or flickering
- The knock is deep, loud and follows the engine speed
- The knock started after the engine overheated or ran low on oil
- You hear a sudden bang or the engine loses power
Paying for it
This is one of the repairs people put off because of what it costs, and putting it off usually makes it worse. You can split it into payments and get the vehicle back on the road now, with Affirm, Sunbit, Synchrony Car Care, NAPA EasyPay and more, including options for credit that is still being built.

What makes an engine knock around here
- Running low on oil between changes, especially on higher-mileage engines
- Worn rod or crankshaft bearings, often after a lack of oil or years of heavy towing
- Carbon build-up inside the engine, which makes fuel burn early under load
- Using a lower-octane fuel than the engine was designed for
- A failing knock sensor that no longer lets the computer adjust the timing
- A loose or broken part, such as a heat shield or a pulley, that can sound like a knock from outside the engine
How we diagnose an engine knock in Hillsboro
- We listen with you first, cold and warm, parked and under load, because where and when the knock happens tells us a lot.
- We check the oil level and condition, and test the oil pressure with a gauge.
- We use a stethoscope to pin down where the sound is coming from, since some knocks come from outside the engine.
- We read codes and knock sensor data to see whether the computer is hearing pinging.
- Then we explain what we found, the options and the prices, before any work starts.

Engine knock questions we hear every week
What is the difference between engine knocking and ticking?
Knocking is a deeper, heavier sound, while ticking is lighter and faster, like a sewing machine. A deep knock often comes from the bottom of the engine and is more serious. A tick often comes from the top of the engine, the exhaust or the injectors, and is usually less urgent.
Will changing the oil stop the knock?
It might quiet it for a while, but it rarely fixes the cause. If the engine was low on oil, topping it up can prevent more damage. A knock that stays after a proper oil level has already done its harm, and it needs a diagnosis.
Is engine knocking expensive to fix?
It depends on the cause. Pinging from carbon or a failed sensor can be an ordinary repair, while a worn bearing usually means major engine work or a replacement engine. We find out which before quoting, and financing is available on larger repairs.
