Headlight Restoration in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

Cloudy or yellow headlights can usually be restored to clear, and sealing them afterward is what keeps them that way.

Headlight lenses are plastic, and plastic yellows in sunlight so slowly that almost nobody notices their own. Then one night on a dark county road outside Marion, a new truck passes with headlights that look unreasonably bright, and you realize yours have been fading for years, right when a deer is most likely to step out. We restore and seal lenses in Hillsboro, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

What headlight restoration at Moxie actually looks like

  1. We sand the oxidized layer off in stages. We work through finer and finer grades until the lens is clear again, then polish it back to a clear finish. That part is not complicated, and it is why the cheap kits work at all.

  2. We seal it, which is the part the cheap kits skip. A freshly sanded lens has lost its factory UV coating, and bare plastic in Kansas sunshine will yellow again within months. Sealing it properly is the difference between a fix that lasts a couple of years and one that lasts a couple of seasons.

  3. We will also tell you when restoration is not the answer. A lens that is crazed all the way through, or one where moisture has been getting inside the housing, needs replacing, and polishing it is money wasted.

Why Hillsboro trusts Moxie with headlight restoration

  • Sealed, not just polished

Sanding removes the factory UV coating. Without a new one the lens yellows again within months.

  • We say when it will not work

Crazing through the lens or moisture inside the housing needs a new headlight, and polishing it is wasted money.

  • It is a safety job, not a cosmetic one

Clouded lenses scatter light instead of putting it down the road, which matters a great deal on unlit county roads.

  • Done while you wait

Most vehicles are a same-visit job.

What clouds headlights around here
  • Years of strong Kansas sunshine, which breaks down the plastic and its factory UV coating
  • Parking outside rather than in a garage or shed
  • Sand and gravel kicked up on dirt roads, which pits the surface
  • Harsh cleaners and road salt, which wear away the protective coating faster

Headlight restoration questions we hear every week

How much light am I actually losing?

You are losing enough to matter on a dark road. A badly oxidized lens scatters light in every direction instead of sending it forward in a clean beam, so you lose distance and the sharp cut-off that stops you dazzling oncoming drivers. On a dark county road, that can be the difference between seeing a deer and meeting one.

Do those kits from the parts store work?

The sanding and polishing part of those kits works fine. What most of them lack is a durable UV coating at the end, so the lens looks great for a few months and then yellows faster than it did the first time. The factory protection is gone, and nothing replaced it. Text us a photo of yours and we will tell you what we think.

Is it worth doing or should I just buy new headlights?

Restoration costs a fraction of new headlights and works well on a lens that is oxidized on the surface, which is most of them. If the damage goes deeper than the surface, or the housing has been letting water in, we will tell you that replacement is the honest answer. Most restorations are done while you wait.
