Check Engine Light Flashing in Hillsboro, KS

The short answer

A flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring badly right now, so pull over safely, turn it off and stop driving.

Unburned fuel is going into the exhaust, where it can overheat and ruin the catalytic converter within a short drive. Picture it blinking on a gravel road outside Marion with the engine suddenly shaking at every stop sign. That is the car asking you to stop, not to push on home. Please do not drive it in, because we will come and get it.

How we handle a flashing check engine light

  1. We come and get it. A flashing light is not something we want you to drive, so we pick it up for free within 40 miles of the shop.

  2. We find the cylinder, and then we find the cause. Knowing which cylinder is missing is only half the job, because a coil, a plug and an injector can all cause the same misfire.

  3. We check whether the misfire did any damage. If the catalytic converter took a hit, we tell you straight so there are no surprises later.

  4. You approve the price before we start. When it is fixed, we drive it again under load to make sure the misfire is gone and the light stays off.

Can I keep driving?

No, pull over safely and stop driving it.

A flashing light means unburned fuel is going into a very hot exhaust. Keep driving and you can melt the inside of the catalytic converter, which is one of the more costly parts on the vehicle, and turn a spark plug or coil repair into a much bigger bill. Find a safe place off the road, turn the engine off, and call or text us. We will come and get it.

Stop driving and call us if

  • The light is flashing at all, even if the car still seems to drive
  • The engine is shaking hard or losing power
  • You smell raw fuel or burning from under the car
  • You see smoke from the exhaust or under the hood

What makes the engine light flash around here
  • A failed ignition coil, often after a hot summer of heat soak under the hood
  • Worn spark plugs that can no longer fire cleanly under load, such as towing or climbing
  • A fuel injector that is stuck or clogged, sometimes after a tank of poor fuel
  • Water getting into the ignition, which can happen after driving through deep water on a flooded road
  • A vacuum leak from a cracked hose, which gets worse in a hard Kansas cold snap
  • Low compression in a cylinder from a worn or damaged engine part
How we diagnose a flashing check engine light in Hillsboro
  1. We pick it up rather than have you drive it in, so the damage stops where it is.
  2. We read the misfire codes and live data to see which cylinder is missing, and when.
  3. We swap and test coils, plugs and injectors to prove which part is at fault instead of guessing.
  4. We check the catalytic converter for heat damage, so you know whether the misfire has already cost you more.
  5. Where needed, we test compression to rule out an internal engine problem before quoting a repair.

Flashing engine light questions we hear every week

What is the difference between a flashing and a steady check engine light?

A steady light means a fault needs checking soon, and a flashing light means stop driving now. Flashing is reserved for a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter. If yours is steady, our page on a steady check engine light explains what to do.

Can I drive a few miles home with a flashing check engine light?

We would really rather you did not. Every mile sends more unburned fuel into the exhaust, and a few miles can be enough to damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call or text us, and we will arrange to collect it.

The light stopped flashing on its own. Am I in the clear?

You are probably not in the clear, because misfires often come and go with heat, load and weather. The fault is still stored in the computer, and it will usually return. Keep any trips short and gentle, pull over again if it starts flashing, and text us today.
