Glow Plugs & Hard Starts in Hillsboro, KS
The short answer
A diesel that is hard to start in the cold usually has a problem with its glow plugs, the small heaters that warm each cylinder so the fuel can light, or with its batteries or fuel supply.
A diesel has no spark plugs, so it relies on heat to start, and a Kansas January morning is very good at taking that heat away. You know the sound: it is well below zero in Marion County, the cattle need feeding, and the truck cranks and cranks and will not catch. We find out which part is letting you down before the next cold snap, so bring it in, or we will come and get it.

Text us which onesHow we handle diesel glow plug and hard start repair
We test every part of the cold-start system instead of guessing. Glow plugs, batteries and fuel all produce the same long crank, and replacing the wrong one just means another cold morning stuck in the yard. If a glow plug is seized or snaps on the way out, which some trucks are known for, we extract it here in the shop.
We check both batteries. Most diesel pickups carry two, and a single weak one is one of the most common reasons a diesel will not start in the cold.
We tell you what it needs and what it costs before any work begins. The best time to get this checked is in the fall, before the first hard freeze.

What makes a diesel hard to start around here
- One or more burned-out glow plugs, which leave those cylinders cold
- A failed glow plug relay or control module that stops power reaching the plugs
- A failed intake grid heater, which some diesel engines use instead of glow plugs
- Weak batteries that cannot crank a diesel fast enough on a frozen morning
- Fuel that has gelled in hard cold, or a clogged fuel filter
- Air getting into the fuel lines, or a weak lift pump
How we find the cause
- We read the engine computer for glow plug circuit codes and cold-start data.
- We test each glow plug and check that power is actually reaching it.
- We test the relay or control module, and the grid heater on trucks that have one.
- We load test both batteries, since most diesels carry two and one weak battery drags down the other.
- We check the fuel filter, water separator and fuel supply for blockages or air.
What we check
- Every glow plug and its wiring
- Glow plug relay or control module
- Intake grid heater, where fitted
- Batteries, cables and the starter
- Fuel filters, water separator and lift pump
- Block heater and its cord
What the repair usually is
- Replacing failed glow plugs
- Replacing the glow plug relay or control module
- Replacing the grid heater or its relay

Glow plug and hard start questions we hear every week
How do I know if my glow plugs are bad?
The usual signs are a long crank on cold mornings, white smoke and a rough idle for the first few minutes, and a glow plug warning light or code. Weak batteries and fuel problems cause the same symptoms, so the only sure way is to test each plug and the relay. We can do all of that in one visit.
Should I plug in my diesel's block heater in winter?
It helps a great deal once it gets cold. Many owners plug in when the temperature drops well below freezing, and your owner's manual gives the recommendation for your truck. A timer that switches it on a few hours before you leave saves electricity. If your block heater stops working, we can test both the cord and the element.
My diesel won't start and it is below zero. What should I do?
Stop cranking once it is clear it will not fire, because long cranking drains the batteries and can overheat the starter. Your fuel may have gelled, the batteries may be too weak, or the glow plugs may not be heating. Call or text us on (620) 416-0008 and we can talk it through, or arrange to collect the truck.
