The Back-to-School Vehicle Checklist Parents Actually Need
School Starts Before the First Bell
Back-to-school preparation usually begins with notebooks, new shoes and a list of supplies nobody remembers needing last year. But the family vehicle belongs on that checklist, too.
Once school begins, your car may become a school bus, cafeteria, locker room and sports-equipment trailer—all before 8:00 a.m. A breakdown is never convenient, but it is especially unwelcome when three people need to be in three different places ten minutes ago.
Start With the Battery
The battery should start the vehicle quickly and consistently. Summer heat can contribute to battery wear, and repeated short trips may not give the charging system much time to restore the energy used during startup. Testing the battery before school begins can help identify weakness before the first cold morning exposes it.
Inspect the Brakes Completely
School traffic brings sudden stops, crowded parking lots and pedestrians who may not always look before stepping out. Squeaking, grinding, pulling, vibration or a soft brake pedal should never be ignored.
A proper brake inspection should include more than the pads. Rotors, calipers, slide pins, hardware, hoses and brake fluid all play a role in safe, predictable braking.
Check Tires and Lights
Inspect tire pressure, tread depth and overall condition. Uneven wear can point to another problem and should be evaluated. Make sure headlights, brake lights, turn signals and hazard lights work properly, especially as daylight hours begin getting shorter.
Do Not Forget Fluids and Maintenance
Review your oil-service mileage and check important fluids. Maintenance requirements vary by vehicle, mileage, driving conditions and manufacturer recommendations. Short school runs, idling in pickup lines and frequent stop-and-go driving can be harder on a vehicle than they appear.
Test the A/C and Defroster
August afternoons can be brutally hot, while cooler mornings will eventually make the defroster important. Confirm that air moves through the correct vents and that temperature controls respond properly. If the A/C barely keeps up or the windshield will not clear, have it checked before you need it most.
Check the Windshield
A clear, undamaged windshield supports good visibility. Small chips may spread after temperature changes, road vibration or another impact. Early inspection may improve the chance that the damage can be repaired before replacement becomes necessary.
